Hi, i've checked everywhere and i finally came to the conclusion that i have some sort of malaware in my computer, more specifically in the explorer.exe file. but i have no idea how to fix it. the memory usage keeps going 97% and up whenever i open a few windows or a file. hope i can really get some help, thanks.
Chinguman can you give us details of your computer? The red note above the message box asks for it.
It is always relevant and could be even more so in this case; eg, if you have low memory, (RAM), it might have to work harder when opening multiple windows.
Explorer.exe is your Desktop GUI, (Graphics User Interface), and so is used all of the time. But are you confusing memory usage with CPU usage? Where do you get this 97% figure from?
The CPU is in use constantly. But the Task manager, (Performance tab), only shows CPU usage when it is called by Windows and programs, and not for background tasks. Typically, when a program is open, (even when Task manager is opened), CPU usage can soar to a high figure and then quickly drop back. If your CPU is "always" showing a high figure then that could be an indication that soemthing else is going on.
What do you use to protect yourself from hackers, viruses and trojans?

It's actually normal and a good thing that XP appears to use a good chunk of all available memory, so if it seems to be at 97% of capacity, this isn't a cause for alarm.
Of course what you describe sounds like you're talking about the CPU use, not memory. The two are about as different as night and day, so it's important you get your terms straight if people are going to be able to help you.
The article [Q819946] explains a problem and the possible fix that when you right-click an item (such as a file, a folder, or a network connection) in Windows Explorer or in My Computer, other programs may temporarily stop performing a task. In addition, if you start Windows Task Manager (right-click an empty area on the taskbar, and then click it), you may notice on the Processes tab that the Explorer.exe process is using a lot (or 100 percent) of the CPU resources.
sorry guys it was computer usage and the specs for my computer are:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
intel pentium processor 1.86 Ghz
.99 GB ram
sorry about that
Thanks for the further information chinguman.
1 GB of RAM is a good size and 1.8 GHz is a fair speed for the processor although not one of the fastest.
Does the 97% cpu usage for Explorer.exe reduce, or does it always stay at 97%.
I would expect the process called System Idle to use 97% when nothing else is happening on your computer. If that is not the case then possibly you need to investigate further.

You can check what each process is at this site;
