Am finding this message string very enlightening.
Sorry to break the news to anyone who has recently purchased the Panasonic TH42PM50U from Costco, but today they were handing out coupons good through 2/19/06 for $400.00 off the $1,699.99 price.
I'm ready to buy the set, I checked my recent mailer and I cannot find the coupon. I am in New Jersey, does anyone know where I can find a coupon? I checked Costco's website to no avail.
CALLED COSTCO AND THEY SAID THEY HAD $400 COUPONS ON "PIONEER" TV'S, NOT PANASONIC
Try swoopup.com for some great digital ready to use coupons
We just purchased the 42'' EDTV Panasonic TH-42PM50U at Costco last night. We are loving the picture at this price but can't seem to find the closed captioing function on the set. Does anyone know if it does or does not have closed caption capability? The tech guy we spoke with at Panasonic was unsure, then said no it doesn't. We'd like to know if anyone who has this set might know - does it let you see closed captioing or not?
Yes. The TH-42PM5OU is capable of displaying closed captioning (assuming you can enable closed captioning with your external tuner).
The control of closed captioning is a function of the external tuner you're using with your TH-42PM5OU. As you know, the TH-42PM50U does not have a built-in tuner, so the ability to enable/disable closed captioning would be controlled by your cable STB (or whatever other device is serving as your external tuner).
I have successfully tested closed captioning (and SAP) with my TH-42PM5OU using my Adelphia/Motorola HD tuner.
Thanks for your reply about closed captioning in the Panasonice TH-42PM50U. We thought it might be a function of the tuner as well but were not able to make it work with our Patriot Media cable tuner/box - although we did get CC with our 2 year old Sony using that same cable box. So we called Panasonic Tech Support directly and they confirmed that model - the TH-42PMso (the one sold in Costco) does NOT have a closed captioning decoder. Their new model TH42PD60U - due out in April will, but the one currently sold at Costoc does not. Guess our TV is going back to the store and waiting for the new models to come out.
I just ran a test by temporarily re-enabling the CC setting on my Adelphia/Motorola HD STB. After about 30 seconds the CC appears as white letters against a black background on my TH42PM5OU. And the text runs about 5 seconds behind the audio (my wife asked me to disable it after a few minutes as she found it distracting).
Panasonic tech support is correct - the TH42PM5OU does NOT have a closed captioning decoder (because it has no built-in tuner). But my external tuner (STB) does have a CC decoder. Once my external tuner decodes the CC (after I have enabled CC of course), it passes the CC to my TH42PM5OU as part of the video signal.
By the way, the new model you are referring to (TH42PD6OU) would have a built-in CC decoder because that model will have a built-in tuner.
When my cable (TV and Internet) signal went out this week a Cable service tech came out to the house. While there he played around with the settings on the cable tuner box and was able to get the closed captioing to work for us. Apparently we had one wrong setting that was preventing it from being shown even though we had the CC option turned on. The happy ending is that our Panasonic TH-42PM50U is working great and displayign closed captioning just fine now. Although it is an EDTV rather than a HDTV it has a great picture and is significanlty lower in price ($1600 at Costco) and we love it. Thanks to all who responded to our questions about how to get our closed captioning to work.
