That's not bad, iax... those pictures look like they came from a real camera.

They're OK

I agree those are very good photos for a camera phone, but certainly not good enough for photos you care about. The color saturation wasn't very good.

Looking good

The quality of camera phones is getting there.
I am quite surprised by the quality. Not yet like my Nikon but good enough I guess.

agree

Yeah, I'd agree with Bob. It's nice to have decent camera capabilities on your phone, because you never know when you might want to take a picture!

Rather than carry a digital camera around with you all the time, why not have the functionality in your phone, for that unexpected funny moment?

but...

True, but if the camera's not up to par, it's worthless. Research the quality of the embedded camera, and only pay more if it's going to be high quality.

a good one's worth the $$

Good advice. The first camera phone I bought, I assumed it would be good enough, and I was more than happy to pay for the feature. I barely used it, then eventually got one with a great camera. It makes all the difference...

happy snaps?

it is nice to have high-quality "happy snaps," if possible...

Even better reason

by frank haynes - 3/19/06 4:27 PM In reply to: One simple reason by dewmanc

I got my Nokia 6230 because it is a great phone, i.e. it has the best radio performance of the models tested by Cingular when it first hit the market. The fact that it came with a camera was of no interest to me, but I had no option to omit it.

It didn't cost me extra because I got it on a schweet deal that actually paid me rebate money to "buy" it, so I have no qualms about this acquisition. I certainly would not have paid up just for the camera feature, that's why I have a real camera. The images that I have seen coming from camera phones are beyond jokes. As in "why bother?"

4x as many cam-phones

by ChipJim - 3/15/06 1:18 PM In reply to: Is there any reason to buy a "quality" camera phone? by Valikhanov

I read somewhere that four times more camera phones than stand-alone cameras were sold last year. That might just speak to the incredible sales of cell phones in general, but I also think it indicates people's willingness to substitute phone for camera.

Each has its own uses

I have a pretty good 7.1 mp olympus- it takes great pictures especially when some one else is using it( i am a notoriously bad photographer)
I also have a standard vga cam on my treo 650- which takes amazingly good pictures and even video clips with sound at a push- I recently filmed a whole wedding ceremony on my treo and emailed it next day to participants.
sometimes you need to take a picture and its really handy to have an easy to use camera close at hand- maybe the timing on a parking ticket maybe a fender bender there could be a multitude of resons for having a camera handy .
sure when you know in advance you need a camera you take the best one but if you dont know in advance and your gonna be carrying a phone in anycase may as well have a reasonable camera on it just in case.

Phone is always with you

I have found it great to have a good camera on my phone for those "snapshots" that I would have never taken because I don't always carry my camera. Best example is a picture of my family when we went out to dinner and a Mariachi band came by the table to play.

Sony Ericsson k790a is AWESOME

by boyracer2k - 3/17/06 12:59 PM In reply to: Is there any reason to buy a "quality" camera phone? by Valikhanov

This phone sports a 3.2mp camera along with the walkman capabilities, and I've played with the k790i [non-American version] and was highly impressed. The Xenon flash, though better than any phone flash available now, still isn't up to par with a regular camera, but is still better than the alternative. I currently have an older Canon a80 as well as a Rebel XT, and the little Ericsson almost rivals that of my a80. Come on, who wants to carry their camera around with them everywhere? We're now seeing technology meld different devices effectively, while keeping the size DOWN, which is important. So, is it a big deal? Sure is, and I can't wait until Cingular picks it up [hopefully].

Camera Phone = oxymoron

by chanks - 3/17/06 1:30 PM In reply to: Is there any reason to buy a "quality" camera phone? by Valikhanov

I don't care how many megapixels a camera phone claims to have you are dealing with a TINY sensor. The size of the sensor (and thus the pixel size) is more important than just the number of megapixels. You should not expect to get any size photo to compare to a digital camera. If you plan to use photos on web or to print small prints, ok, otherwise save on phone and buy a quality digital camera.
