Just like the guy above me, I only subscribed to this to tell you it worked!! Thanks!!!
hi! i saw your solution, and it seems to have worked for a bunch of folks... but was wondering if you could help me out. it didn't work for me - when i typed in that command in dos, it said 'can't open volume for direct access.'
basically, the brand new drive worked fine for about an hour... i began transferring tons of files over from another external drive to the maxtor drive, but then some data error occurred (it couldn't transfer a folder). every since then, i can't even see the maxtor drive on 'my computer'... if i simply have the drive turned on while running my computer... programs freeze up. when i turn the drive off, everything returns to normal. please help!! thanks!!!
My Maxtor One Touch 200 gig has been goofed up for months. I have tried everything to access it and nothing has worked. I came accross your post this morning and tried it and as simply as that I am now able to access the drive and nothing is lost! Thanks so much!!!!
I have an 80 GB External Maxtor Hard Drive, on which I attempted to use the chkdsk utility the other day in order to correct problems it was having. I brought up MS-DOS, and typed in chkdsk j: /f. The program began to run normally, displaying "The type of file system is FAT32". However, after that the Windows Error Report box popped up stating "Chek Disk Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close." Any recommendations?
Nothing in your post suggests taking any new direction.
Bob
chkdsk worked for me, which was great (I have a WD 120gb external that was replaced a couple years ago when it did a similar thing.) But under my computer, it says that it still has 30gb of files, but no files are seen and I've tried toggling hidden files and such.
I know you don't know me, and I know that your original post was over a year ago, but I just encountered the same problems as the others. I followed your solution, and it worked perfectly! All my files have been recovered. THANK-YOU!
my GOODNESS - you never realize how important 70Gigs of digital information is until it says
"I/O device error"
and the drive reads as "100% free" as a drive. I thought everything was lost and my wife, "all 1,500 pics of the kids???". crying in disbelief of course.
Solution, thanks to holtocw:
Start
click on "Run"
at command prompt, click: chkdsk H(your drive letter):/f
let it run. it will say 1 of 3 steps and a buncha crap after that. at the end, your drive should show up under your my computer
I have a refurbished Maxtor 4 A300J0 DiamondMax 16 300GB in an aluminum ext encl with USB 2.0 Firewire with dual fans and a tri-color LED light. (yes it looks sweet as all heck). It just wouldnt read one night due to a "I/O device error" and would show up in my disk mgmt but not in 'my computer'.
it works. trust me. im a pessimist and a half.
g'luck

Hi,
I have a 250Gb NTFS Gericom External Drive.
Yesterday I was in the process of writing a large (circa 100Gb) backup to the disk when my PC crashed and I was left with no option but to switch everything off.
Was using EZBackitup to write the backup file which I do once a week. It does not create a backup file, but recreates the folder structure from the PC on the external drive, deleting extra files and folders on subesquent runs (which this was).
Turned the PC back on, but forgot to switch off the external drive. It hung for a minute until I realised it was trying to boot from the external drive. Grrr.
After the next restart the PC ran very slowly and the drive took an age to be recognised. When it was it was virtually impossible to access it. I did some research, found this thread and ran chkdsk g: /f
It ran for approximately 20 hours and reached stage 2 - verifying indexes, where it failed pretty quickly with the following message:
An unspecified error occurred.
During the first stage it reported a large number of unreadable file record segments (at least a couple of hundred of them).
Any suggestions on what to do next would be most appreciated. Though the data on the disk is not essential as I have most of it on the PC and on anohter drive I keep at a friends house, I would prefer not to format it just yet as it has some stuff on that I don't have backed up anywhere else.
Cheers,
Matt
I tried the same thing and received cannot open volume for direct access
I signed up to cnet finally so that i can thank holtocw for his suggestion to use chkdisk in the command prompt. I was getting i/o device error and was getting ready to shell out some money for one of those data recovery programs. I did as he suggested and I got my drive back. I am very very grateful for you taking the time to put your suggestion in writing. You are a time saver. THANK YOU
I know it has been 3 years, most probably you won't see this post but I can't stop writing something for you. You saved 15-hour work, I wish I could do anything for you.
