Windows XP Media Center edition is a cross between Home and Professional, but with an extra twist...the multimedia aspect with the 10-foot interface. Basically, MC is designed for computers that are placed in the living room as a central media hub and are connected to your TV, among other things. It allows you to play videos, music, slideshows, etc from your computer using a remote control, and everything's 'supersized' (sorry, McDonalds :)) so that you can see it from a distance of 10 feet. It's just a layover on top of Windows that provides the easy access. Since you don't play DVDs on your computer, and aren't big into multimedia in general, don't intend (as far as I can tell) on turning your living room into multimedia central, etc, MCE isn't something you'd really need. In addition, MCE is picky about various things, especially hardware, making upgrades tricky. Thus, I'd just stick with XP Home, then consider upgrading to Windows Vista in a year or more, after the initial release and bug-finding expiditions. ![]()

WinXP Home on it, I've looked. So I think I've settled on the Hp Pavilion a1350n, which has media on it. I know I probably won't use it right away but who knows about the future when I learn more?
Thanks alot for all your help!! =o)

Hi,
I think it depends most on the motherboard and not the type of CPU you buy.
For example if you purchase and AMD ATHLON 64 with a Nvidia chipset, 1GB of DDR-2 RAM with a Good Graphics card you would beat any system (DELL, etc) with any configuration.
I know its a bit of a pain, but if you do search the market you will definately find one.
If you cannot let me know and I shall find one for you.
All the best.
I'd suggest checking out Envision Computer Solutions.
I recently bought a fine AMD 3800 2X w/ 2 200 sata hard drives (w/ raid), video card, 1 gig of memory, and a fine motherboard, case, the works--delivered for less than $1200.
Check them out at Resellers Ratings. Can't be beaten.
After reading the answers, I thought I jump in, since I just bought an HP. Mine is the a1340n, which has all the ingredience you are discussing, including 1GB of memory, and a 250GB hard drive, plus a DVD-RAM secondary tray. It nay be just the right PC. Hope this helps. Vojislav
a pavilion for 5 years and I am sure you will love it!! I just have to upgrade now(buy a new one cos I have WinMe) and your system configuration sounds about right for me too!! so thanks again!Gina
nvidia whatever huh? ok I will keep that in mind! Thanks alot!Gina
The PC I am writing this on is a Dell Optiplex GX150 Pentium 3, 1 GHZ recenly reloaded with WinXPSP2 by the IT dept and guess what?
With the same 512MB of RAM, it works just fine thank you and it has way too much antivirus, anti-pop up, anti-malware, and backup, etc programs (Symantex, Altirus, and other hidden programs) on it that IT insists we all have and still I can use Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, FrontPage and Adobe creator without having to shut any program off before starting another. I have a 7200rpm 40GB hard drive. Standard onboard everything else w/ 10/100 network.
XP does work on P3s. (at home I loaded XPSP2 on a Celeron 400 with 320 MB SDRAM and it also works with a wireless card as the network device with 3 IE windows open simultaneously)
My point: big horsepower is not always needed.

AMD is far superior over Pentium becaus it wil run smoother / cooler / and less trouble with glittches
all of these reasons really show up when running large programs / multi tasking / and particularly when running games
windows open so that is great to know! thanks again, Gina
AMD passed Intel in performance, price and reliability with the K6-2 and never looked back. I have a Athlon 64 3200 now with 1.25 Gig RAM and do a lot of 3d cad graphics and animation. I often run it at 100% for hours doing rendering and animation flawlessly. It runs very cool. It's not an Apple but only cost about $600 not $3000.
