Spyware is dangerous as they collect your online life

by Ladymaggic - 3/14/06 7:34 PM In reply to: Which do you think is the biggest security threat? by Marc Bennett Moderator

You inadvertently give away many details through the constant recording of where you are going online.
This is especially true if you go to secure sites such as Banking, purchasing, social security, etc that require you to exchange private information that is genuine.

Its like the backtracking and detailing of video cameras to show so many minute details...spyware has far greater potentials as if needed, your codes can be broken and all your privacy exposed so easily.

I am so glad I am not rich or famous, as these people lose so much more, with invasive spyware being added to invasive photography and research. Even you and me, our lives are always being sneakily monitored and recorded. Its most invasive and also done without your consent or even your knowledge.

This is the most threatening security threat ever, and I do not think people even realise how invasive it can be because it is just so insiduous.

ATTN: Remember the forum policies...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 3/14/06 8:19 PM In reply to: Which do you think is the biggest security threat? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I realize that the option of "The White House" in this poll is a popular option that can stir up a LOT of political debate. However, please keep the forum policies in mind when posting. That means no foul language, personal insults, attacks on groups of people (based on politics, nationality, religion, etc), and so on. If you see any violations, please report them instead of replying to them.

Thanks,
John

Remembering the Forum...

by DH1 - 3/19/06 9:05 AM In reply to: ATTN: Remember the forum policies... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I look forward to email from CNET. The polls and forums are both educational and/or entertaining.

Reading this week's question "Which do you think is the biggest security threat?" I immediately noted the question did not include the reference "computer."

I spend a bit of time each week at the CNET site to learn about *computers* (and related devices). If I wish to read or opine about political matters I could do so at one of a thousand other websites.

I submit that including "The White House" in this poll was totally inappropriate.

Please, CNET, don't make this mistake again.

All you who voted ''The White House'' are speculating ...

by merchContractor - 3/14/06 8:29 PM In reply to: Which do you think is the biggest security threat? by Marc Bennett Moderator

and are paranoid to the max!

Most people are usually gullable and they can be vulnerable to anyone's scams - including the ''snail mail'' ones, over the telephone and including the Internet. Unprotected computers, of course, are the most vulnerable to be attacked by anything - viruses, spyware, phishing emails, pop ups that infest your computer, etc. [I knew a person who told me a friend of their's who had to reformat their computer because they didn't use any virus protection at all....yes, people like that are still out there!]

People usually believe anyone who can make a good argument against anything to make a believer out of themselves to the persons they want to believe in them, so it's really not the hardware/software stuff out there on the Internet or it's really not ''The White House''.....it's PEOPLE in general that allow themselves to be gullible - taken in - by others who they want to believe, thus the damages are already done because of their ignorance to investigate the issue/situation themselves. These people would rather have someone else do it for them, thus eliminating their own time and efforts of finding out the truth themselves; hence, they turn to the people they'd rather believe and allow their gullability to take over rather than waste their own time and forming their own opinions. That's what is most critical to the biggest security threat in this country! Being GULLIBLE!

GULLABILITY

by wasnot - 3/14/06 9:34 PM In reply to: All you who voted ''The White House'' are speculating ... by merchContractor

Well put. Most of these people who answered ''White House'' would not have answered the same way were it the Clinton, selling-secrets-to-the-Chinese, Whitehouse. Hmmm...wonder why? No I don't. YOu anwered why already.

It is the stupid and/or dishonest publc

by laburner - 3/14/06 8:40 PM In reply to: Which do you think is the biggest security threat? by Marc Bennett Moderator

White House has convinced too big a segment of the American public to ride along with it. While recently many have fallen off that wagon too many are still hanging on to a belief that there some kind of Holy Agenda that will save the supporters from eternal damnation.
It is difficult to say where the cerebral community should step in as nobody wants to tell the kids the truth about Santa Claus.
The corporations are running our government because the folks in the government are fewer and simpler than ever. The simpletons calling for ever smaller government want to downsize the only institution where they have a voice. That voice is being heard less and less because the corporate moguls have more and more control.
The corporations want to control the work force, the consumer, and average Joe. It is the corporate attitude that inspires the dollar seeker to the phishing, spying, and the maverick actions that are forgiven in the world of Big Business.

A Very Good Point taken here...

by merchContractor - 3/14/06 9:04 PM In reply to: It is the stupid and/or dishonest publc by laburner

Bravo to this writer. I was wondering if someone had the guts to spill the beans about Corporate shenanigans like this. I have to agree with "laburner" because I know how big corporations do their "takeovers" and these corporations are the ones that downsize your jobs to the lowest paying job seekers overseas! We've had more than 10 factories in our state close down because of this. And yet we "wonder" why some of our products don't work as well as they had in the past. And the corporations that employ overseas are the biggest security risks for this country (USA) because they'll sponsor anyone overseas to take over your jobs here and they could also be infiltrating the terrorists right in your backyards!

Spyware the biggest threat by far

by sharingansasuke - 3/14/06 8:42 PM In reply to: Which do you think is the biggest security threat? by Marc Bennett Moderator

It is the biggest threat primarily because there is just so much of it out there. Much of this junk comes with a complimentary trojan as well.
Results are slowed computers at the least and entry to your network at the worst.

It can't be Phishing

by HawaiiMuskrat - 3/14/06 10:55 PM In reply to: Which do you think is the biggest security threat? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Only someone who has been in a coma for the past two years (or has the equivalent IQ) would be caught responding to an email request for private information. Duh! This has been hammered home everywhere constantly - not just in groups like this but on TELEVISION for gosh sake!

I have no pity for anyone under 80 who gets caught.

According to me

by fredsteigman - 3/14/06 10:59 PM In reply to: Which do you think is the biggest security threat? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Phishing,

This is the worst and most dangerous type of damage. Viruses , spyware etc all can be undone with ease. But what if your private information falls in wrong hands (credit card nos, bank username & password etc. )

A virus can be prevented from attacking, even if it attacks , it can be undone with some effort.

But to undo a phishing attack is too tedious and before you even realise that you were made the victim its too late !

Think on what I have said.
