HTIB suggestions or go AV receiver/speakers seperately??

by ilikenascar - 3/13/06 4:44 PM

I've done the searches, any extra input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking to spend $500 (unless a little extra gains much better value overall).

What I have:

Philips 32" LCD TV
Playstation 2
Charter HD cable box
Dell computer (currently in the setup)

My PS2 seems to be crappin out lately, so what initiated this all is the need for a DVD player. Figured if I'm spending a little $$, why not get a new toy.

So I guess I'm looking for a HTIB with a dvd player built in, and one that has many inputs for various sources. Pretty general I know, but are there good HTIB systems out there, or are they all pretty limited on inputs, and it'd be better to go individual AV receiver? Just trying to decide what the breaking point is for $$ vs. equipment and quality, all that fun stuff. Thanks!

For that money

I would not buy a HTIB.

There are a lot of nice receivers in the 300 dollar range from manufacturers like Onkyo, Kenwood, etc. For another 3-400 dollars, you could buy a set of surround speakers from JBL or Klipsch. For less than 100 dollars you can get a nice DVD player from Toshiba or Panasonic. And there are others in this range.

For the money, you will get a better receiver with more inputs, more power and possibly video switching. You will be able to upgrade to better speakers (one or two at a time if necessary) when the time arrives. This is something that you probably will not be able to do if you buy a HTIB.

Good point

Yup, I was thinking about that. I'm definetly one of those that'll spend a little extra if I need to if it'll be better in the end. I can wait a little longer if I need to save the money. I just wasn't sure if there was one "good deal" out there HTIB wise that everyone knew of. Anymore inputs? Thanks.

This is a lifestyle

I dont think anyone here wants to go with the basic HTIB. Its no fun, and its not your vision. The fun part is picking each piece one by one, hooking them up, adjusting, and adjusting some more. Their are a lot of people who are happy with the HTIB. But if their ever comes a point were you want to expand you are stuck. Im a young guy and I understand cost is an issue with most of the people my age(me included). But this is a great distraction from the books, so i put my all into it, and have even managed a few jaw drops from viewers.

Go to circuit city and ask about the Onkyo Home theater set. I built my system piece by piece over the years and that's the way I prefer it, but Onkyo offers a HTIB that is outstanding for the money. It's the HT-S780. It comes with a 7.1 channel, high current receiver. Six bookshelf speakers for your surrounds, an identical sized center, and a 220 watt powered subwoofer. The receiver is no slouch producing 110 watts per channel. It also plays all the new sound formats including Dolby Digital EX, DTS ES, and Dolby Pro Logic II. The backplate is full of inputs including 3 component video inputs for your high def video equipment. At less than $500 dollars for all this, you can pick up the six disc Onkyo dvd player to compliment the set. I offers progressive scan to give you the best picture. I've recommended this system to a few people and have yet to hear that anyone was less that thrilled with the performance. I hope this helps.

Onkyo HTIB

I also just recently purchased the same system. Its worth every penny. The model # is Onkyo HT-S780 in black or silver. I recently bought the silver from Fry's for $399. Awesome deal.

Unlike other HTIBs, this is an actual receiver from Onkyo. There are more than enough inputs for the items you are running. Surround speakers are a little larger than other systems, but they sound great.
