Added memory causes computer problems

by partytildawn - 3/13/06 4:36 PM

I have an older HP Pavilion 751n desktop computer. I am running windows xp pro with sp2. When I purchased the computer a few years ago it had 256mb memory. Today I tried to add another 2100 ddr 256 memory stick and my computer worked okay at first but then started shutting down for no reason and then would not even start back up. I pulled out the new memory stick and every thing went back to normal. When I checked with the HP website it said my computer should be capable of running an additional 256 of memory. Any idea what I could be doing wrong.

Does the new memory module work by itself in the old module's slot?

Any details on the two modules you have (old and new)?

Brand name?

CAS Latency (timing)?
Usually something like ''2.5'' or ''3''
Or something like ''3-3-3-8''

If you mix latencies/timings, you could run into trouble.

Download and run CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php) to learn what the latency is for any installed memory.
