I have a long story on this matter.... But to make it short,I upgraded from NAV 2002 to 2005 and NAV 2005 TRASHED MY COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have spent from 7-12-05 to now rebuilding my computer to a USEABLE STATE.............

NORTONS IS A JUNK PROGRAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I now use AVG Free 7.0 for my virus program.

Should I renew my Norton

by Jane London - 8/5/05 8:00 PM In reply to: Should I renew Norton? by cmungo

I have just renewed my Norton from 2004 to 2005 and was reluctant to do because of costs (I'm stingy as well as broke). But I've found since having it I'm finding it really good as they seem to have upgraded it a lot. I have Ad-aware on my computer too and I used to get a lot of viruses to remove, now I rarely get one at all after running it. I often get notices in the corner to let me know it's fighting off an invasion and overall I feel it's been worth it.

I would advise anyone to upgrade, and after a computer crash installing another anti-virus from the internet, I would also say they have a good name and when you are on a good thing stick with it, and upgrade to a better product.

NORTON RENEW OR NOT?

by Billyo - 8/5/05 11:04 PM In reply to: Should I renew Norton? by cmungo

I've got Norton2005 at present, but will look very seriously at "NOD 32" ; its been recommended by a couple of shops, and has had great reviews for the last 4 years. Have a free look.

Absolutly not

by mrobzo - 8/6/05 6:11 AM In reply to: Should I renew Norton? by cmungo

It causes all types of small glitches and cost way too much. They are a rip-off company. They are over bloated and stuffed full of useless nonsense. Get one of the free anti virus software programs. I have used both free anti virus programs and have found them both to be excellent.

Should I renew Norton??

by Ivan - 8/6/05 9:06 AM In reply to: Should I renew Norton? by cmungo

Could you please explain in more detail (step by step) what you do here. And how do you get the Norton Internet Internet Scecurity to continue to serve you if the subscription has run out? I don't understand.

Don't do it.

If you go to any of the other forums, you will find that very few like 2005. It's not like 2004. I've used Norton for years. Two months ago I up graded to Systemworks 2005 Premier. What a disaster. It wouldn't install properly. I can't access Live Update. I have to update manually. I can't access any of the other features. I have totally wasted $150.00 on system works and Personal Firewall. I've tried following their online instructions. 4 times. No success. They want $29.94 per phone call to give me any real Help.

If you check other Forums, you'll find very few who like Norton. They all recommend AVG or AVAST. Both are free down loads.

I talked to the Guys at Charter Pipeline. About every two weeks, Norton goes in and changes my account settings so I can't access my E-Mail. I finally learned how to change them back so I can get mail.

They said that a lot of people are having the same problem. And suggested I use their FREE A/V and firewall. I hate to through away $150.00, but, I guess that's the way I'll have to go.

by bjw1 - 8/6/05 12:25 PM In reply to: Should I renew Norton? by cmungo

I switched to Trend Micro's PC-cillin last year for modest cost. Love it! I kept Password Manager from Norton and got rid of all the other Norton programs.

NAV 05 ain't bad IMHO

by ackmondual - 8/7/05 1:24 AM In reply to: Should I renew Norton? by cmungo

NAV 05 ain't bad IMHO, altho other freeware/shareware AV programs are probably better. I've used NAV 04. Works well. I emailed Norton tech support and someone responded within 24 hours and provided a sound solution that worked. That was the only time (last) i emailed them though. I wouldn't know if their tech supp deteriated since then. I like NAV 05's interface, and some of the minor improvements are nice. I don't find it bogging or slowing down my system. I have a relatively high end PC tho:
P4 3.0GHz proc
0.5GB PC3200 RAM
160GB 7200rpm IDE hd w/8MB buffer cache
winXP Pro w/SP2

I read the Cnet review of Norton AntiVirus 2005. It suggested to upgrade only if you're already using NAV 04, since NAV 05 plus the annual subscription renewal is $30... only $5 more than the renewal alone.

I felt that my impartial research was good enough, and went on Cnet's advice on this. Didn't want to spend excessive time on finding the "right" AV app when in the end, they all get the job done more or less

NO WAY!

by wanguru2001 - 8/8/05 5:28 AM In reply to: Should I renew Norton? by cmungo

It is old code that does not catch current bugs, even the 2005 version. It also clashes with many programs. Get Trendmicro PC-cillin Internet Security instead. Cheaper, far superior product.

I recommend avast! (free)

by Dominesey - 8/14/05 6:48 PM In reply to: Should I renew Norton? by cmungo

I converted 4 PC's from NAV to avast! (free) earlier this year. The reviews for avast! are better than NAV. Why pay for something that doesn't work as well and is a known resource hog? Kinda a "no brainer", especially when comparing 4 license fees to free. Avast! works well on all 4, I'm running Win98SE on two and one each on Win2000 and XP-SP2.

In fact, avast! just caught a virus in an infected e-mail this morning on my XP machine. Deleted it with no problem. I've had fewer software conflicts and lock-ups since making the conversion. I can't imagine I'll ever go back to NAV (Norton Anti-Virus). You can download avast! from CNET or at www.avast.com

By the way, I know AVG seems to have a larger following in the USA, but I didn't see any reason to try it after reading the reviews. The self promoting advertising message AVG adds to all your e-mails in the free version is a turn-off for me.

Avast, you can't beat the price

by Lovie11 - 3/13/06 4:59 AM In reply to: I recommend avast! (free) by Dominesey

I've tried several anti-virus softwares, NAV being one of them and I think Avast is the best. It notifies you of an attacke in real time. Free, you can't beat the price.

Turn off AVG self-promoting messages

by fontaine_a - 3/13/06 5:29 AM In reply to: I recommend avast! (free) by Dominesey

You can easily turn off the messages attached to incoming and outgoing emails in AVG by unchecking the Certify incoming and outgoing email check boxes. You can get to that by double-clicking the Email Scanner (in the Control Center) and clicking the Configure button on the Plug-ins page. I never liked those messages either and always turn them off right away after an install.

If not Norton...?

by scubbysteve - 3/13/06 5:56 AM In reply to: Should I renew Norton? by cmungo

I have no problems with replacing Norton with another product. I have experienced slowdowns also.
What is a good alternate for the One-Button Check-up Scan feature of SystemWorks?

Post 60 of 66

Nope, not anymore

by JoeyD - 3/13/06 7:03 AM In reply to: Should I renew Norton? by cmungo

Norton simply got to clunky and intrusive. It slowed my machine down right in the middle of a project or at the worst possible moment. It made boot up *really* slow.

I'm trying Windows Live OneCare now and so far I'm happy with it. A few glitches but, it's beta SW now.

good luck
