Another Upgrade or Buy New Question from Me

by chit_n_chat - 3/11/06 4:13 AM

My father has an old PC that is comming up to 5 years old, it is running okay and it has had a large number of the parts replaced inside under warrenty but it is running a little slow. I think the only part that hasn't been replaced under the warrenty is the motherboard and possibly the CPU.

The setup is like this (aproximatly, can't be bothered to look up exact details for him)

1.5GHz CPU
40GB Hard Drive
256MB RAM
XP Home Edition

Now, although the PC is old, he only uses it for Word Processing, internet and other basic tasks. Nothing too demanding. Now the upgrades we were thinking of were along the lines of upgrading the RAM to 512MB - 1GB (Proberbly somewhere in between if it has two slots because we'll leave the 256MB in and add a 512MB stick)

Possibly double up the hard drive space but he's also considering buying an external one for backups so it may be cheaper just to buy the external one and have that as extra file storage if we buy big enough. The question is, is it safe to backup files under a second external hard drive if it has the expansion slots?

So, the question is, Upgrade or Buy New? The upgrade to 1GB of RAM should have a reasonable effect, I added 512MB to my machine a few weeks back and it made a massive difference. Also, would a CPU upgrade be sensible?

512 Enough and Vista by the end of year!

You should only upgrade your RAM on this computer to 512. After that it would have "diminishing return" to upgrade any more. If he's only using it for word processing and internet activity, I would hold off on purchasing a new one. Microsoft is releasing a new operating system (Vista) at the end of the year and it might pay for you to wait and get a new computer with the new system already installed. How much room does he have left on 40 G hard drive? If he only uses it for word processing, he should have plenty to see him through....

New Hard Drive...

It's just had another new 40GB drive because the old one stopped working so it's pretty empty, 30GB space left I think

Plenty of room

He has plenty of room to grow. Wait for the new OS. Of course, wait until it has a little bit of a track record. We all remember the "kinks" with XP and 98 that had to be weened out before it was stable enough. Six months is a good yardstick!

Good Luck!

How did the old hardrive stop working?

How did the old hardrive stop working? If it just crashed, maybe you can reformat it and use it as a 2nd harddrive (backup) You can buy and enclosure and use it as an external backup drive if you have a usb port available.
