I just purchased a Netgear 824 wireless router and have it up and running with my DSL connection. I have a wired desktop with a printer and a wireless laptop.
The million dollar question, how do I share files now between the two? I have set-up used the Windows XP network setup wizard on the desktop. Only problem is on the laptop it recognizes the router and the internet but it doesn't recognize the desktop that is connected to the router.
I've heard about access point's and print servers, but am not sure what I need. Is my wireless router for internet sharing only???
same workgroup, files and printers sharing enable, dhcp enable?
what IP did you get now on the router, laptop and desktop..?
SEARCH this forum .. and hopefully read it .. you will find many question like this with the answer.
What operating system is on each computer?
BOTH COMPUTERS:
- have same Workgroup Name
- need a shared folder on each computer for file sharing both ways
- tell each computer's personal firewall to allow access from computers on network (the most neglected step)
NOTE: You could share files with just one shared folder on one computer. Both computers will have access to the one folder.
PRINTER SHARING (after following the above instructions):
- at desktop, share the printer
- at laptop, open ''Printers and Faxes'' window and ''Add Printer''
NOTE: you don't have to have file sharing (and shared folders) to share a printer.
ALTERNATIVE PRINTER SETUP:
Connect the printer directly to your router with a Print Server (wired or wireless--your choice).
I'm running Windows XP on both computers.
I think I got the file sharing thing down and I'm sure I can get the print sharing down as long as I have the file sharing up and running.
I guess what I'm trying to do is locate my desktop through my wireless laptop. When I go to available networks it shows my wireless router which it is already logged into, but I don't see anything related to my desktop workgroup name on that list. How would I find that through a wireless connection.
...you click on "My Network Places"?
