I have Windows XPSP2 with AMD Athlon XP 1900+ (1600ghz) and USB 1.1
I recently bought a Freecom 80GB external Hard Drive (USB 2.0). In order to allow this hard drive to function properly I bought and installed a USB 2.0 PCI card with 4 USB 2.0 ports)
When I connected it it worked ok, that is for about 10 reboots and then I got a yellow bubble message from the system tray saying:-
"that a high speed device was detected but it would function at a slower rate because the ports are not 2.0."
I have tried each of the 4 ports but it is always the same. The Freecom Ex.HD works OK for a number of reboots then I get this bubble advisory and saving to the hard drive is incredibly slow. If one reboots its then OK again
Anybody experienced this or has any suggestions to correct?
Many thanks
Terry
1. Motherboard drivers are not installed or out of date.
2. The USB cable is not USB 2.0 capable.
3. The system power supply is strained.
Best of luck,
Bob
I have also seen XP get "confused" from time to time. Another option is to remove the USB PCI card and boot up the PC and log in. This should let XP determine that the card is no longer there. Now, shutdown the machine, put the card back in and reinstall the drivers. Hopefully this will fix the problem.
Thanks for your suggestion. I have taken out the card, rebooted and then replaced the card and rebooted.
Everything went OK. Only time will tell whether it worked.
I am not sure about the drivers. What do I do to reinstall them. Are they not reinstalled when the USB 2 card is picked up by Windows?
If not could you talk me through how to reinstall them.
Thanks for your help
Terry
They are from the motherboard maker. If not them, the chipset maker. This and more clues at http://www.usbman.com
In the case of the card driver, it's likely to be fine, but ...
Bob
Run> compmgmt.msc
Go to Device manager
Bottom has Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
YOu have to click every single one of thoose and check for updates for all of them.
YOu probably already had usb 2.0. ; )
