I have this file (CAIR8RCN.) on my desktop which I can not get rid of. I don't know where it came from but it says "Error deleting file or folder - Cannot delete file: cannot read from source file or folder". I went in folder options and unchecked 'unhidden file extension' to see what kind of file it is but there is NO extension to this file. I also tried to delete the registered file type (it shows as blank extension) in Folder Options it wont let me do that either. Is there a way to get rid of this file? its just annoying sitting on my desktop. I've scanned with antivirus and spywares programs nothing helped.
Thank you.

use safe mode. Logon as admin and then take ownership of the file. After that you should be able to delete it.
Use 'MoveonBoot' from Gipo Utilities.

Double-click on MY COMPUTER
Right-click on C-Drive
Select PROPERTIES
TOOLS, Error Checking, click on CHECK NOW;
Check "Automatically fix file system errors."
Follow prompts and reboot.
MS Checkdisk should find the file error and fix it.
If that doesn't fix it, reboot again to safe mode DOS Prompt and try deleting it.
If that doesn't fix it, reboot to the windows startup disk and go to your C drive and delete it.
You shouldn't have to go and get any special bells and whistles programs just to delete it.

thanks man dang this thing really works alot
Hi there,
The file that you cannot delete will be on your hard drive somewhere, what you have to do is locate the file folder in your Program Files and delete it from the the whole folder then empty your recycle bin and then delete the file from your desktop. hope this helps.

I have used ''Eraser'' for a number of years and it will do the job of deleting the file you want. The web site for download is: www.tolvanen.com/eraser/
The plus side of this, is that the program is free!
User privileges can be a very confusing issue on a home computer--you would think since it's your own computer and not on a network that you would always have full rights, but if you've created more than one user for family logins it may be that the user who is logged on (you) is not the administrator. If the file was created while another user with higher privileges was logged in, you may not be able to delete the file unless that user is logged in for the deletion.
Go into your ''my computer'' and look at the file structure, especially who is listed as the owner of the first ''documents and settings'' in the upper level--it may not be you! I had to fight with my HP winxp for a while because it insists on setting up a shadow administrator (in addition to the Windows administrator) every time I reboot--and who wants to look at ''HP_Administrator'' as a member of your family every time you go to the login menu! I finally compromised by renaming Frankenstein as myself and accepting that my real documents and settings are assigned to HP_Administrator in the file structure. Yuck!
So make sure you are logged in as one of the users with full administrative privileges before trying more elaborate measures like third-party software...
... easily by doing a System Restore to your latest restore point.
I once had a file (more like a sticker on my screen) just like that. The only thing that worked to get rid of it was the Windows Desktop Cleanup. It puts it on a folder wich you can then delete. To find it go to the display properties (right click on your desktop and choose properties), go to the desktop tab, click the ''customize desktop button'', and on the General Tab you should see a ''Clean Desktop Now'' button, on the lower right-hand corner of the window.
Hello , try the search and ,when it comes up right click and delete, this has worked for me in the past, you search for what ever you like and if it comes up it is just a click away to delete. Jwils5n0129.
well i didnt delete the file but i got it out the way. I simply moved the file off the screen in the corner. This hid it nicely when the computer is use but it would peek back whenever i restarted. The other thing you could do is take off auto arrange and align to grid. Then with a bit of mouse controll you can carefully drag another file over it to hide it.
Not perfect but i assume the problem is mainly cosmetic. You may also be able to hide the icon under the taskbar if it is unlocked.
Go to GIBINSOFT.NET and select GiPo@MoveOnBoot application. It's a small freeware app that copies, moves or deletes files and folders on the next system boot. The utility is very useful when the user needs to replace or delete files which are locked by other applications, loaded into the memory or just cannot be changed until next system boot. Have been using it for a couple of years for difficult files. Worked every time.
