Yahoo, The Worst

by mishu13 - 3/3/06 9:54 AM In reply to: YAHOO IM REALLY EASY AND WORKS VERY NICE ! by SinCitySaint

I started out on yahoo because a friend wanted to IM me, so I started out on Yahoo, but I think Yahoo IM is probably the worst there is out there, at least that is my experience.

I agree

i have an older machine that simply does not support 7.5; when I download it, it keeps shutting me off. Even with 6.0 I can only stay on for about five minutes before it stops sending. It eats my offline messages, coming and going, now and then refuses to let me access my email...it also has too many fun features that overload the system. I really dont care about voice, or video, or webcams, I just want to send messages.
Its just not my choice for IM, but that's where my friends are. Its that or email and most of them dont have a clue how to use it. *g*

Yahoo IM

by superman92805 - 3/3/06 6:58 AM In reply to: Yahoo IM by jsmooy

I prefer Yahoo IM over all of the messengers. I have tried tham all and found Yahoo to be the most feature based especially with the ablility to IM your friends when they are offline (they get the message when they sing in). Also the new Photo sharing 7.5 Yahoo is great too! I use it with friends and family members instead of Emailing photos just seems easier.

however...

by mittens - 3/3/06 4:54 PM In reply to: Yahoo IM by superman92805

yahoo has become so feature laden it seems bloated; the difficulty now is, older versions are not always compatible with the new 7.5, and my messages to friends are often lost completely. Even when I try to IM them outside of a game room, it's rare that we can talk at all. Often one of them will say I tried to IM you this afternoon but Yahoo told me you were using a different version of IM and it was incompatible.

Not exactly my idea of an easy IM service. The feeling is, they dont want to support the older versions, and are making it as awkward and difficult as they can for people to continue to use them.

I tried downloading 7.5 but it just wouldn't work properly on this computer, which is six years old.

So I'm stuck. and there is no way I am buying a new computer just so I can talk to people in IM.

Not just bloated but lame

I used to use Trillian Pro but had some problems with my messages going through after my subscription finished up. I have returned back to Yahoo! only cause we use it for work. However, I hate most everything about it. Chief complaint has to be the "dress me up" avatars. When I see adults play using this feature I question evrything about them. If I were a there manager, I'd probably fire them. I know a 60 year old women who has an avatar that looks like a 8 year old. Folks, these cartoon dolls aren't you! The audibles get old fast. Speakers in a office are a rare thing to see turned on so it mostly misses the effect but you also lose privacy which is why most people are using a messenger to instead of a phone. I like emoticons but like the problem with Trillian, you have a selective list and you lose most them fun having to search for them. Not really instant if you are browsing. The funny thing is my company has been building a IM for awhile. It has had some of the best features before most other came out but since we have only used it as a beta internally this statement has no merit. I bring it up because of the research we have done. One of the most requested features that I haven't seen on and IM is spell check. How weird is that?

I've changed over the years but finally settledd on yahoo

by embrya - 3/3/06 3:21 AM In reply to: Which instant-messaging application do you use the most? by Marc Bennett Moderator

mainly because most of the ppl i talk to use it. back in the day i preferred icq and i think it's still the best for everything. but nobody i, personally, know uses it anymore. my second favorite is aim...outside of the ads that it serves up (nicely blocked by a prog from secretmaker.com) it's decent enough. i hate msn with a passion but there are few buddies of mine who are of the type who just accept wutever is on the computer when they gt it and pretty much refuse to change, ugh. i would never use trillian though. i prefer to have the functionality of my im programs separately.

Odigo is my favourite messenger! (Why has Odigo problems?)

by cathy6416 - 3/3/06 3:38 AM In reply to: Which instant-messaging application do you use the most? by Marc Bennett Moderator

End of last year umtil beginning of this year odigo didn't work for ca. 8 weeks. Now odigo messenger doesn't work since three days . Which problems has my favourite real exciting messenger? Political problems? The Odigo Messenger needs a better organisation to have not such problems, because he has strong fans. And the internet too, maybe, because this not working is harmful for my social communication and working as developer too. One thinks to know the causes and the "causers", but is not able to condemn them. This needs further deliberations.

Their website...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 4/7/06 10:35 AM In reply to: can't access Odigo by arianravan

If you go to their website you'll notice a scroll going across the top that reads "From 1/1/2005 Odigo will no longer be interoperable with other IM accounts." They don't go into any details, but it appears they were bought out by Comverse, which decided to end development on the software and send Odigo into a deep sleep. This started going down in August and likely explains the problems you've been having.

Rest in peace, Odigo.
John

trillian yes

by mock - 3/3/06 4:30 AM In reply to: Which instant-messaging application do you use the most? by Marc Bennett Moderator

i have been using trillian since version 0.64. i'm now a pro user and love it. technically, trillian isn't a service, only a client that connects to the other services. and right now, i'd have say i like yahoo's service the best. but there isn't one out that that has all the features i wish instant messaging had. irc would be my second form of service after yahoo.
