Use a registry cleaner

by tallin - 2/24/06 8:15 PM In reply to: Anti-virus Software by pain_viande

I take your point re clogging up the registry if you try all sorts of different programs, but I use two programs that I hope takes care of that for me. They are: Registry Fix and Regseeker. My computer does not slow up trying all types of software.

security softwares conflicts!

by sarta2 - 3/24/09 11:13 AM In reply to: Anti-virus Software by pain_viande

I have a norton security software. Lately,I tried to reinforce the security of my pc by adding an avg 8.5 download!.the program was installed but my pc was so slow and could not start for minutes with the screen freezing and the cursor hardly moving. The two programs were in a fight inside there man! which one could take over! However
norton detected a virus two days after the downloading of avg while avg did not.
I tried to uninstall avg which was very tricky to get off my pc and very demanding to get rid of it. Best advice stick to one security
software with updates! Good luck.

Anti-virus Software

by pain_viande - 2/24/06 6:48 AM In reply to: Is it safe to use mulitple anti-spyware programs on one pc? by DUKESofHAZZARD

You should stick on a Anti-Spyware. They are almost all alike. Don't forget, that every time you delete a Program, you leave all kinds of files on your computer. Theire is a place called '' Registry ''. Everytime you delete something, you have files that stays in you Registy. And after a while, you will notice your computer is slower and slower. Its because the Registry is full of programs that you tried; and even if you go in your Add/remove program, thinking that you deleted you program, wrong some files will reside in your Registry. Almost all Anti-Spyware are good; and Anti Virus to. The best thing you can do, is to buy a well nown Anti-Virus, and a Anti-Spyware, and stick with it, In my case, i have Trend- Pc-Cillin since 1998, and never add any problem with it. I have a Anti-Spyware from Google, and it works fine. Like anything, if you try all kinds of Software or sharesare on the Net, and if you are not a experience User, you will end up clogging your computer so much, that you will be oblige to format it; because you will start having cross link prblems, and the computer will start running very slow. Good Luck

Stop spyware from loading

by Jerry747 - 2/24/06 9:56 AM In reply to: Is it safe to use mulitple anti-spyware programs on one pc? by DUKESofHAZZARD

I have ad-aware, spybot and pc-cillin security suite '06 on my system with all three always on and have had no problems. The greatest little program I've found though is SpywareBlaster, a freebee, whose only function is to prevent spyware from loading in the first place. Before I had it, scans with the three programs mentioned always turned up a few baddies. With SpywareBlaster installed scans rarely ever detect anything. It runs in the background and requires nothing from the user except the occasional update. It's a great addition to system security.

Jerry, you said it well...

If given only one choice for an anti-spyware product, SpywareBlaster would be it.

Absolutely right!

by gamer1 - 2/27/06 9:47 PM In reply to: Stop spyware from loading by Jerry747

Spywareblaster does not seem to conflict with other anti-spyware programs and does a good job of preventing spyware infections in the first place. I also immunized my PC with Spybot Search & Destroy and Spyware Doctor. None of these three programs seem to conflict with each other. Now I never get adware/spyware except in the form of cookies( which are easly controlled with CookieJar) or temporarary files, which are also easily deleted. This is fantastic because my spyware problems seem to be over(YES!) Just keep them updated.

I have 3 spyware programs

by abilone71 - 2/24/06 3:04 PM In reply to: Is it safe to use mulitple anti-spyware programs on one pc? by DUKESofHAZZARD

I have Spybot, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, plus Norton. The first two were free and I pay for Norton. I have had no problems with any interfering with the other and no spy problems. Norton offerred two rebates if you purchased their 2006 version. I sent in the rebates with all info attached. They informed me I didn't sent in the right infor so they wouldn't send me the $10.00 either. I wrote them I had Staples look them over before I sent and if they denied me I would report to Better Business Bureau. Strange, I got an e-mail next day saying they had made an error and I would get both. I got $20 they didn't get to pocket.I don't know what company Norton uses but I feel it is a scam. Abilone

Other Free anti-junk programs I'm currently testing on my pc

by DUKESofHAZZARD - 2/24/06 8:04 PM In reply to: Is it safe to use mulitple anti-spyware programs on one pc? by DUKESofHAZZARD

I recently installed a few free anti-spyware programs.

So far I love the free trail version of Ewido which is anti-malware (Hijackers and Spyware, Worms, Dialers, Trojans). I have to say I haven't been impressed for a long time with a free product since I last installed SpyBot S&D and Spyware Blaster which was a long time ago. I don't use the Process Guard because I read that it takes up to much pc resources and slows the pc down, but that the scanner and manual updates are still available for use after the trial expires.

I'm also currently testing Bazooka Scanner, CCleaner and Mailwasher. I read that these were good freebies for PC protection, performance, etc. so I'm going to try them and later decide for myself if these claims are true or false.

Anyway, feedback, opinions, suggestions about the FREE anti-spyware/malware/etc. programs I listed above and if you know of other good ones to recommend or dangerous ones I should avoid is definitely welcome here.

Some rogues anti-spyware programs are spyware

by gamer1 - 2/27/06 10:09 PM In reply to: Other Free anti-junk programs I'm currently testing on my pc by DUKESofHAZZARD

Go to this website: Spyware Warrior; there you will find lists of rogue anti-spyware programs which do more evil than good. There are only a handful of good ones. I had problems with Microsoft Anti-spyware crashing, so now I use Spyware Doctor which I think is the best. It's free to use and will protect your computer but you'll have to buy it to remove the spyware, but that can be done by editing the registry manually. I know, that can be dangerous if you're not careful, but it is effective. I plan on buying it because it is really good. Webroot Spysweeper is too slow, in my opinion and is not free. There aren't a lot of good free anti-spyware programs. Ad-aware and Spybot S&D are the best free programs.

I USED SMALLER CAPS...YOU ALL CAN READ IT NOW..GEEZ

by mine2luv - 2/24/06 10:14 PM In reply to: Is it safe to use mulitple anti-spyware programs on one pc? by DUKESofHAZZARD

hello, for many years i used multiple anti spyware programs. spy doctor, registry doctor, adaware, no adaware, spybot and so on plus my norton anti virus.
i can see how they conflict with each other. i have also seen how too many programs working can cause slow startup and also bog down your computer and cause minor problems.the programs i mentioned are good programs like the other perrson mentioned each one picks up things the other programs miss.why they all dont pick up on the same things is beyond me.you would think these good programs would be smart enough to pick up on the same problems. but they dont.
anyways...my point is this..my husband was on a porn site..grrr...and basically destroyed the computer. it cost 135.00 have it redone, it was so messed up i couldnt do it by myself.
the computer guys all told me that even tho the above programs are very good but not all needed......they told me microsoft anti spyware (((free))) www.microsoft.com and norton antivirus and even using the aol program is enough. clean out your registry every week, clean out your temp files, run a virus check every week and it is enough..i did what they said and my computer has been great. it dosnt bog down anymore, the startup is faster.plus you can trust putting microsoft software in your computer.dont download the entire aol protection program if you already have a program like macafee or norton because it will conflict. ..basically this is what i wrote above in caps....sorry guys...no need to be so snippy..

Windows Defender isn't free if we paid for...

by DUKESofHAZZARD - 2/25/06 12:24 AM In reply to: I USED SMALLER CAPS...YOU ALL CAN READ IT NOW..GEEZ by mine2luv

Microsoft XP Pro + sp2. SO technically we have paid to have Windows Defender. Since it is fairly new, I can't say if its good as other free or paid antispyware programs out there, but I can say the its previous version Microsoft Antispyware Beta did not catch most or all spyware on my pc...whatever it missed my other anti-spyware programs picked up the trash that MS Antispyware didn't.

True

by eddiettr - 2/25/06 12:48 AM In reply to: Windows Defender isn't free if we paid for... by DUKESofHAZZARD

That's a good point, we have paid for xp (although SP2 is a free download for it). Microsoft Antispyware hasn't actually found anything on my computer, but other programs such as Ad-aware and Spybot nearly always find tracking cookies, and sometimes more. Howver, I like it for it's alerts when it detects changes to the startup log, hosts file, etc. That part's quite useful.

The Best spyware and adaware program is Spy Sweeper!!

by dondebeaumont - 2/26/06 9:07 AM In reply to: Is it safe to use mulitple anti-spyware programs on one pc? by DUKESofHAZZARD

The best program out there that I used so far would be Spy Sweeper. It blocks all the spyware and adaware that I come across with. It costs money to get but its like $30. I got mine at best buy. It worth getting if you want to have your computer free of spyware and also adaware. I find nothing wrong with this program at all. I definally recommend it to all.

Spy Sweeper cannot be the best if it does not remove spyware

by maranho - 2/26/06 1:01 PM In reply to: The Best spyware and adaware program is Spy Sweeper!! by dondebeaumont

I ran a sweep with Spy Sweeper and made note of the spyware it identified and removed. Another sweep was run using Ad Aware which identified the very same spyware the Spy Sweeper had supposedly removed.

Spy Sweeper cannot be the best with this activity.
I use Ad Aware, Spy Sweeper and Spybot Search and Destroy to keep on top of the problem. What is frustrating, is that I am a paid subscriber to Spy Sweeper.
