I have read many reviews of different anti-spyware programs and many of them contradict each other at times. So I bought a few anti-spyware programs to see which one's are good or not. I like Spyware Doctor and Sunbelt Counter Spy the best so far. The next best I have to say is Webroot Spysweeper.
I also use Trend Micro Anti-spyware, CA Pestpatrol and Tenebril SpyCatcher and I don't like these as much as my top 3 picks.
My favorite free anti-spyware that I use is Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE.
What I notice is that after I use them one right after the other for a scan check of my pc, each one will find spyware/adaware/etc. that the other misses.
Anyway, is there any risk or danger in using multiple anti-spyware programs on one pc?
Don't think you have to worry about having them all on your computer and using them. Some of these however will continually run in the background like your AV.So to avoid any possible conflicts, choose only one of your favourites to leave monitoring all the time. And while your here, any difficulties with spycatcher?.
Yes, I have had lots of difficulty with Tenebril SpyCather and Ghost Surf Platinum 2006. When I first bought SpyCatcher alone, it wouldn't install properly until their great customer service helped me fix it. It worked great after this. But I later bought GhostSurf Platinum which created other problems that I did not have after I installed it. I like the anti-spyware program but for some reason, Tenebril's software is incompatible with my other anti-spyware programs For some reason. GhostSurf Platinum disabled my PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Registry Mechanic, and it disabled my Webroot SpySweeper and Windows Washer. My Windows XP also warned me that my pc had no anti-virus protection. But when I uninstal and remove Tenebril GhostSurf Platinum from my pc, I have none of the problems I mentioned above. Any ideas how I can use Tenebril GhostSurf Platinum wihtout any problems?
I am running XP Professional and it has its own set of quirks that could ( and have,) filled some books. This is my own experience. Panda, prior to some of the latest instantations, caught many things that slipped through the AV and Malware that Mindspring / Earthlink missed. Unfortunately, in its latest ( at the time that I quit using it both soho machines, it required a complete uninsatllation, registry editing, and a reinstallation each time either machine was restarted. ) Now I use CounterSpy and Trend Micro and they co-exist seemingly very well together. Lavasofts SE Professional worked very well, but Trend Micro warned against using it as it would prevent Trend Micro form updating properly. I have to turn off either to update the other, but I can live with that. Panda refused to admit that I had a problem so I dropped them like a hot rock. By itself, it seesms to be a good program, as do so many. None that I ahev used catch everything, but this combinations seems to work, so far. Good luck, for I suspect that it is in aprt, a machine dependent problem, in getting multiple anti-malware programs to co-exist. Cordially and somewhat confused by the whole problem, Red Bell
I tried tenebril, and upon running a scan, it found about 20+ 'suspicious programs', even though I use over 5 other spyware apps including search and destroy, ad-aware, and Windows Antispyware/Defender. However, the information it gives about them is completely wrong and it says that completely legit applications and services are spyware, and even gives a name of them! However, because it had a name, and detail of what it claimed the application does, I believed it. Whenm I went to the options, I even took the liberty of deleting the files, (not blocking or asking) as I didn't want them doing anything, and it seemed to 'know' that they were bad. Basically, they were very important windows files and I messed up my computer. So yes, Tenebril finds loads of 'bad' files, but no, they're not always bad.
Thanks for the info. I don't know which to run in the background, maybe someone can suggest which one to run in the background?
is oky.
I am running Windows XP/SP2. I have the following ant-spyware/malware installed.
Ewido Anti-malware
a-Squared
Microsoft Defender 2
Counterspy
Spybot search and destroy
Only two are active/scheduled, and they are Counterspy, and Defender 2. They are scheduled at 6pm and 7pm daily. My anti-virus is Grisoft AVG 7.0 (free) which is scheduled for 7pm at each day. The others I use at random. Each program finds something, one or two each day. None conflict with the other and my system is clear of all spyware and malware. I use PC DOC PRO 3.5 and CCCleaner on a regular basis. I have and run manually Registry Fix and Regseeker. That's it, hope it helps you all out there. One other thing I did this week was clone my entire computer with Nortons Ghost 10, onto an Internal Seagate Barracuda 160GB removable Hard Drive. Very impressed with it and it does incremental updates daily with a once a month entire update backup, all at 8pm on a Friday evening.
HELLO, FOR MANY YEARS I USED MULTIPLE SPYWARE PROGRAMS. SPYBOT, ADAWARE, NOADAWARE, SPY DOCTOR,REGISTRY CLEANER,NORTON ANTI VIRUS AND ON AND ON...IVE TRIED THEM ALL
I HAVE SEEN HOW THEY CAN CONFLICT WITH EACH OTHER. I HAVE ALSO SEEN HOW TO MANY PROGRAMS BOG DOWN YOUR COMPUTER AND CAN CAUSE MINOR PROBLEMS..THE PROGRAMS I MENTIONED ARE GOOD PROGRAMS LIKE THE OTHER PERSON MENTIONED EACH PROGRAM PICKS UP THINGS THE OTHER DOSNT. WHY??? I HAVENT A CLUE. YOU WOULD THINK ALL THE PROGRAMS WOULD BE SMART ENOUGH TO PICK UP ON THE SAME THINGS...ANY WAYS..MY POINT IS THIS...MY HUSBAND LOOKED AT THINGS ON THE COMPUTER **GRRR** THAT HE SHOULDNT HAVE AND IT WAS SLAMMED WITH TROGANS AND VIRUS'. IT COST ME 130. TO HAVE THE COMPUTER OVERHAULED. THE COMPUTER EXPERT TOLD ME THAT EVEN THO THE ABOVE PROGRAMS ARE GOOD THE BEST THING AND THE ONLY THINGS NEEDED ON THE COMPUTER ARE...1)NORTON SYSTENWORKS AND ANTIVIRUS..2)MIRCOSOFT ANTISPYWARE ..YOU CAN GET THIS AWESOME PROGRAM FREE AT THE MICROSOFT HOMEPAGE. IT IS BETA BUT MICROSOFT SHOULD BE KEEPING IT FREE. IT IS A 100% TRUSTWORTHY PROGRAM BECAUSE IT IS COMING FROM MICROSOFT. IT DOES NOT CONFLICT...3) SPYDOCTOR..STILL A GOOD PROGRAM...4) AOL SPYWARE...((BUT BUT BUT DO NOT USE THERE ENTIRE ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM IF U ALREADY HAVE NORTON ANTIVIRUS BECAUSE IT WILL CONFLICT WITH EACH OTHER........SOMETIMES LESS IS BETTER...BE WIZE WHEN ON THE COMPUTER...NEVER OPEN EMAILS THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW, NEVER LOOK AT PORN ON THE COMPUTER, IT WILL KILL IT!, BE CAREFUL WITH MUSIC SHARE..SAFE-SHARE WWW.SAFESHARE.COM IS A TRUSTWORTHY SITE FOR DOWNLOADING MUSIC AND MOVIES AND STUFF, IT IS ABOUT 26.00 A YEAR FLAT RATE. THEY BELIEVE IN THE RIGHT TO DOWNLOAD WHAT YOU WANT OFF THE COMPUTER BUT BY LAW HAVE TO CHARGE YOU THE 26.00.........I HOPE I WAS OF HELP..LISA
made your post unreadable so I made no effort to wade through it. All caps are extremely hard to read on a computer screen. No doubt good information was missed.
Glenn
I agree Glenn, no need to shout at us. I didn't bother to read it either.
You should stick on a Anti-Spyware. They are almost all alike. Don't forget, that every time you delete a Program, you leave all kinds of files on your computer. Theire is a place called " Registry ". Everytime you delete something, you have files that stays in you Registy. And after a while, you will notice your computer is slower and slower. Its because the Registry is full of programs that you tried; and even if you go in your Add/remove program, thinking that you deleted you program, wrong some files will reside in your Registry. Almost all Anti-Spyware are good; and Anti Virus to. The best thing you can do, is to buy a well nown Anti-Virus, and a Anti-Spyware, and stick with it, In my case, i have Trend- Pc-Cillin since 1998, and never add any problem with it. I have a Anti-Spyware from Google, and it works fine. Like anything, if you try all kinds of Software or sharesare on the Net, and if you are not a experience User, you will end up clogging your computer so much, that you will be oblige to format it; because you will start having cross link prblems, and the computer will start running very slow. Good Luck
For background running applications, I use Spyware Blaster as my first line of defence along with Spyware Guard, SpyCatcher and Microsoft Anti Spyware Beta.
I have the latest Spybot and Ad Aware SE editions as well.
In spite of running checks on the relevant ones, SpyCatcher continually picks up suspect codes the others don't detect. Admittedly the number of such codes tend to diminish every time I quarantine them, although you have to bear in mind between scans, old and/or new codes can download themselves again in the meantime.
Still, it's quite puzzling, that SpyCatcher seems to be the one application continually identifying sneaky malware considering the number of other security applications I've loaded onto my computer, as backup to my bought edition of Zone Alarm Antivirus.
