power calibration error with iDVD

by Webrazor - 2/23/06 9:01 AM

have researched this issue to death, and cannot come up with a consensus answer. i have a PB G4 1GHz with a 1x matshita dvd-r uj-815 superdrive. i have an movie a developed within iMovie 3 that i sent over to iDVD, and from there sent it to burn. it rocks along ok for a while and then ejects my disc, giving me what i know now is the dreaded "power calibration error." i have read many complaints and many solutions on many forums re: this issue, but can't seem to find any one answer. i have tried several different types of media, i have cleaned my OD, and i have repackaged the movie after removing several of the effects. i have read about cynikal's firmware update, but it seems that all this will do is unleash 2x capability and i am a bit wary (although i have read about many satisfied users). interestingly, when i was first trying out imovie and idvd, i made a short movie from my daughter's birthday footage with very few effects, sent it over to idvd, and got a successful burn on the second attempt. no such luck with my latest 18 minute movie. any guidance out there? i would be greatly appreciative, as i am about to invest in a new dvd drive if i cannot figure this out.

thanks in advance-

Is that 3 or more years old?

One of the downsides of cheap technology is that the stuff has fairly short lifespans. I'd try another make media, lens cleaner, maybe new firmware (each time retest) and then swap the drive.

However since I record and 2.4 to 4X all the time, I applaud your patience in sticking with the 1X drive.

the machine is probably 3-4 yrs old (can't recall), and i used it entirely for work purposes. however, since it is a powerbook, i have lately taken interest in learning the multimedia software, which is awesome on MAC (i can now see why mac users who work with multimedia hate pc). any guidance on good dual layer external drives? i think i am going to go ahead and get one that i can use with both mac and pc.

Macmall is often noted and will get you the compatible drive.
