Getting started with XP
by eelnavi - 2/20/06 7:59 AMMy problems with win98 are a thing of the past. I still have to install all of the previous programs.
Just got WinXP installed with AMD Athlon XP 1800+ and 512 Mb RAM.
I'm gonna do read the walkthroughs, the help section but is there anything i need to do first. The XP firewall is on so does this means that i no longer need Zone Alarm?
However, there is no Antivirus. I previously used Norton (brother gave me a crack version). I figure I'd download another free Norton version later. XP had some recommendations but which should i choose?

There's a free 1 year trial with Computer Associates but I'm not familiar with them.

Great advice and expertise. This is why we come to CNET! So you're saying that Avast or AVG will do.
Previously, i used the Spybot, Ad-aware and CW Shredder triple threat. Are there any new programs that i should use instead?

And as Robert said, there are at least two decent free virus scanners out there, so you don't need to use a cracked version of anything. Also, if it's worth anything, Computer Associates is essentially McAfee, and I would recommend staying far, far, far away from it. Their virus scanner will slow your system down by about 20% just by being installed and running.

You need outbound protection ......

Windows firewall does not provide for outbound protection. This is needed because downloads from the internet may be the major way infections are aquired BUT it is not the only way. Infections of various malware can be loaded onto your computer from cds whether they be commercially produced (with included adware/spyware) OR from some cd(s) a friend has given you. At this point, malware can now send out information about your computer, your internet habits, or even worse your personal information.
Please be safe and use one of the free firewall solutions that provide both inbound and outbound protection. The system resources used by these programs are minimal concidering what can happen to your computer and you if they are not used.
