This one does not have Dual 12V rails. How important is that for a video card?

power supply

by dillon45 - 2/17/06 2:08 AM In reply to: If you had to pick a powersupply... by jrmar07

you have to remember that bigger is not necessarily better, a 450 power supply doesnt push out 450 all the time , it supplies what is needed up to 450w unless you are a gamer or do a lot of video work , chances are you will never need half of that so why pay big bucks for something you dont need, better to buy a good 300w with good cooling than a cheap 450 plus

Picking a power supply

by Dobby - 2/17/06 10:01 AM In reply to: If you had to pick a powersupply... by jrmar07

I use a 650 watt Mad Dog from Comp USA (very easy to install)...it has four fans and three speeds. It is handling Athlon 64 system containing two internal harddrives, two internal DVDRW drives, plus a doggle to my NVIDIA video card...all with no problems. System also uses two external harddrives, one external CDRW drive, one external DVDRW drive, one USB HP printer, and one USB scanner, but all using separate power supplies. Word of warning...if your power supply is inadequate, you may pop capacitors on motherboard!

Actually the bad caps on motherboards is a known issue. LINK

Just my thoughts.....................

We've used Enlight power supplies for years in low cost and medium-priced systems with no problems. For higher-end systems and servers, we use StarTech power supplies; again with no problems. Geeks.com used to be the familiar ComputerGeeks website. They've been around quite awhile and have been excellent to deal with. Very helpful and honest over the phone (a big plus nowadays!). Sorry, but the power supplies listed on their website aren't anything I would recommend period.

Power Supply

Ultra makes nice low price power supplies. For $70, and it's modular so you only use the cables you need. I'm running a 500 watt model and have enough stuff on there to kill a common power supply. Works nicely and looks even better. Too boot there usualy a rebate available too. You should no problems installing it in an Emachine case since it's standard size.

That Emachine

Well as a technician, please note that you are not alone. Many Emachines had power supply problems. Good reputable places such as Staples won't even carry that brand anymore.

Do they use proprietary PSs in eMachines.?

by VAPCMD - 2/17/06 8:07 PM In reply to: That Emachine by geomurray

I wonder how many of those failures were caused as folks (over)loaded their eMachines with peripherals they added after acquiring it? That happens to Dell boxes too deosn't it ?

Antec

Hi All,

My 300W power supply (four year old PC in an AT Case, AMD Athlon 950) got overloaded when I put in a Nvidia Ti 4200 Video card. Our son (who was visiting us - he is a computer engineer) and I looked at a lot of different power supplies before settling on an Antec 400W unit. The amperage rating on the Antec unit was m;uch higher than that for 450W generic brand power supplies. Once installed, the Antec power supply has never even "complained" with the load, even if running a large 3D game.

Generally speaking I agree. However...

reading the buyer reveiws on Newegg I'm not so sure about the one's being made today. Same with Enermax...I've had good results with them too but reading the buyer reviews on current offering ...well, you be the judge.

Next time you buy a PS...take a look a look at http://www.PCPowerandCooling.com and some of the power supply reveiws on places like
http://www.Tomshardware.com. If you find anything other than a top notch review...let me know.

Antec all the way

by psytropic - 4/28/06 10:08 PM In reply to: Antec by bbriley

Antecs are all I run. I have a 400W I've had for about 2 years now, and altho I only run an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, it works great, I MAY upgrade to one of their 480W Neopowers when I upgrade to a 7900GT.

Don't seem to be as bullet proof as they used be. .

by VAPCMD - 4/28/06 10:42 PM In reply to: Antec all the way by psytropic

Reviews at Tomshardware and elsewhere indicate there are other units in the same price range that simply rate better and outperform Antecs. Buyer comments at Newegg far from perfect too. I don't hate 'em ... I own several including the Tru Blu 480... but there are better ... last one I bought was Seasonic S12-600

Without a doubt...

I use the Ultra X-Connect series in all my machines. Great power supply, decent price (not cheap, but reasonable), use only the power cables you need. Comes in a vatiety of wattage outputs, & there is no better reasoably priced power supply, imho.
