Chevy

1999 Chevy S-10 and a 2000 Impala. I've been driving since 1966. Tried Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Siat and even VW and have always come back to Chevy. Last truck was twelve years old and had 220,000 miles. Taking it easy with this one. It only has 107,000 and it's almost seven years old. The Impala belongs to my wife and she only lets me drive it when she doesn't want to take her purse.

Way to keep it American!

Don't really care if it's American or not......

I came back to Chevy simply because it's a better vehicle for the money. I'm not really sure where the idea came from about bad GM quality, even in the 80's. My old Chevette outperformed two Toyotas I had. When I say "outperformed" I mean as far as reliability and amount of repairs required. For me, a Chevy was better then and I am expecting it to be better now because I have come back and plan to stay there! It's just a matter of being a smart consumer who pays attention to cost/quality/reliability. On these 3 things Chevy (GM) is King!

I've driven a lot of cars

by pkipnis - 2/15/06 4:20 PM In reply to: What do you currently drive--and what make and model? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I've been a rep for 30 years and driven a lot of Taurses and Sables without any problems up to about 125K miles, then sold them. I've rented just about every car out ther and would't want to own any of them. I failed to see what the hype about Honda is about, it's a nice car but boring... I tried the three pointed star car, but it only enriched the mechanics. My fat butt went to sleep in a 5 series after a month and now I drive a 2000 Jaguar XJ8 and love it.

Two different types of Ford vehicles: 1 car and 1 "SUV"...

by btljooz - 2/15/06 4:21 PM In reply to: What do you currently drive--and what make and model? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The car is an 88 Mercury Cougar; V-6.

The "SUV" is an 89 Ford (BIG) Bronco 4x4; V-8.

I LOVE them BOTH!!!!!!!!:)

2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL2

by joc1394 - 2/15/06 4:22 PM In reply to: What do you currently drive--and what make and model? by Marc Bennett Moderator

2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL2
3.4L Pushrod V6 (3400 SFI)
4 Spd. Automatic
Roughly 20-25 City, 28-33 Highway

Nice fun-to-drive car, gets decent mileage per gallon of gasoline, but can be a maintainence nightmare. GM quality isn't anything to brag about. I like to refer their products as "disposable cars".

Thinking of trading for a Honda/Toyota/Chrysler in the next year or so.

GM Quality Issues Lost Me For Life...

by R.Frisch - 2/15/06 7:55 PM In reply to: 2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL2 by joc1394

The Alero was one of Olds most attractive cars, in my opinion. I (briefly) owned a 1999 Olds Intrigue, and I can affirm that these GM Cars are a mechanical nightmare. I will probably never own another GM car again in my lifetime, and I am only 33 years old.

They lost me at an even earlier age

by gswonsn - 2/17/06 7:28 AM In reply to: GM Quality Issues Lost Me For Life... by R.Frisch

I must admit that I suffered through a similar situation in my 20's when I purchased a 1978 Buick Regal. I suffered through almost 3 years of driving a loaner from the dealership more than the car that I purchased while they were trying to get all of the problems with my car corrected. I finally gave up on even trying as the problems kept mounting and getting worse. I swore that day that GM had lost me for life as a customer. I have lived by that so far and am now in my 50's. I have extended my policy to include all the brands that GM has added to it's nameplate list since then too, such as Saab. Their cars, to me, are now some of the ugliest and worst engineered cars on the road and certainly don't give you a since of being a good handling, fun to drive car that I am looking to put in my driveway.

My experience with GM cars has, for the most part, been good

by BunnyBuns - 5/15/06 3:20 PM In reply to: They lost me at an even earlier age by gswonsn

My first car was a used early 1980s Pontiac T100 that I drove for five years before totalling it in a blizzard. I had to replace the catalytic converter (did so only a month before totalling the car :( ) and hatchback air pump thingy, but, other than that, put little money into the car.

Which led me to buy a used 1987 Pontiac 6000LE, which I drove for 17 years. I think I put no more than $5000 into it mechanically in all that time. The biggest bill was when I had to have the radiator replaced in 2001, about $300. I bought a new car in 2003 when looking for a new job and feeling I couldn't rely on a 17 year old car anymore for long commutes.

I next bought a used 2001 Oldsmobile Alero. I have only two complaints about the car. First, the brakes are noisy. I took the car to three mechanics before one could tell me why: when the brakes were installed, the rotors weren't cut; however, all agreed the brakes were in perfect working order and the car was safe to drive. I looked up info online about cutting the rotors, and GM's website says not to, it could cause a safety issue, but they acknowledge the the brakes are noisy. Bugs the hell out of me, but the car is safe. My second complaint is dealing with GM dealer mechanics. Since this is the most complicated and expensive car I've owned, I took it to the local GM dealer for the 30,000 mile manufacturer-suggested checkup/tuneup. I paid more than $900 to have things done to a car that was in perfect working order. Never again. I'll go back to my usual mechanic who does only what's necessary and nothing that isn't, even if you want him to ("Why do you want to spend the money?"). Otherwise, the car has been great.
