Alright... I've been in the Mp3 game now for quite a long time... way before the iPod was big, I remember owning one of the first HDD players... the 6GB Creative Nomad Jukebox. Not the slimmest thing in the world; about the size of a CD walkman. I sold it a few years back for lack of use and desire to upgrade. Since then I've been stuck pondering.
All these huge mp3 players... 20, 30, 60GB? I don't think I own that much music. I think all the music on my computer plus (if i ripped every CD I own onto my computer, which I have no intention of doing) would bring my collection to somewhere between 6-10 GB.
This is my problem. I don't want to pay so much money for a player with space I'll never use... and all these new flash players are really slick, but they top off at 2-4GB. Micro drive players are the least popular it seems, and this disheartens me.
I've been lookin for a decent Mp3 player, ranging somewhere from 6-10GB, no more, no less... it seems like the only decent ones out there are the Creative Zen Micro & the (now-defunct) iPod mini. Cowon, Samsung, iRiver, Sandisk, Sony, MobiBlu ... none of them top over 5GB.
Anyone have any ideas? Help a brotha out. Or if not, heard any rumors of such players in production? How bout a 6GB Nano or Shuffle? A 6GB Cowon? I'd even be game for a 6GB MobiBlu cube.
The iAudio 6 is coming out, using a .85" microdrive, making it the size of a flash player.
Apart from the drive it seems to have the same audio / video specs as the U3, which is an amazing player.
I don't know how big the drive is going to be, but the U3 goes up to 2Gb, so I would think it has to be at least 4Gb.
Looks pretty sweet too. Prettier than the U3.
If the audio quality is as good as the U3 it's got be worth checking out.
I don't know if you saw this, or if you are just looking for flash players, but the Zen Micro Photo it has been around for a while and is 8 gigs. Phillips has a MD player at 6 gigs. Toshiba Gigabeat has a 10 Gig model...
If you are looking for a flash you will have to wait - the end of march the new 6 gig Sansa comes out, and and I'm sure higher capacity flash players will follow.
It costs about as much to make a small micro drive as it does to make a larger ipod sized one. They're smaller, but you get less storage.
They're bigger and more susceptible to jostling than flash based players.
If you want a hard drive player, a 20GB X5 can be had for between $200-250 if you shop around. I'm sure you can find other brands/models in the 20GB range that are even cheaper.
They will come out with a 6GB flash player in the very near future, but it'll probably sell for more than $200, so unless you need a flash based player (for running, small size, etc) just break down and buy a hard drive player.
The Zen MicroPhoto from creative is 8 gb, and is the same size as its predessesor the zen micro. There are however going to be a few 8 to 10 gb modles of mp3 players coming out very soon with all the features of a video player from many brands. But they arnt coming out for atleast 6-12 months, so a good bet is, the zen microphoto, which is pretty strong.
I have one and love it, its a great little player with very high audio quality, and the small pocketable size is really convenient.
