are made by separate companies. Beem was referring to Spyware Doctor not PC Doctor. (There was also confusion on Bill Jr.'s part on 2/12, when HE referenced Spy Doctor - yet a third and other company.
)
I realize you were mistaking PC Doctor for Spyware Doctor and NOT Spy Doctor, but I thought I might clear up any confusion. (Too many doctor's in the house!!)
There is reference to the latter two in this article:
http://netrn.net/spywareblog/archives/2004/08/01/spy-doctor-and-spyware-doctor/
And I'll bet if you were slightly confused before, I've probably managed to TOTALLY confuse you now.. but I didn't mean to! ![]()

I use Spyware Doctor™ 3.2 for Windows it is not PC Dotor. The Spyware Dotor I use is downloaded from CNET.com.
I have been all over the place and cannot find an answer. I read user reviews and they said it was FREE. So, I downloaded it, it ran a deep scan, found some things, and then it said I had to purchase it to clean stuff up.
How do you use it for FREE, other than to scan? All help appreciated. Thank you.
"free to download and try"
.
That I totally understand. However, in reading the reviews on this software, 2 - 3 people stated that it was free and it removed the problems it found. Since I wrote the first inquiry, I've kept searching. The 2-3 people that said so, did back in March and April. So, I've deducted that it must have been back then, but now now. Thanks for your response tho...appreciate.
Oh! sorry, I feel I'm careless.
Appreciate your clarifying that--there is so many names they run together---can't keep up with it. Probaly be smarter if I would just keep my mouth shut and I would learn something. Cheers
I have found a bug in Spyware Doctor. Once the program is installed,
it locks the drive so that Partition Magic and Chkdsk cannot do
offline work.
The error from PM is "error 27 Cannot lock drive"
The error from chkdsk is "unable to gain exclusive of drive"
Uninstalling spyware doctor fixed the problem
I have the same problem starting with the modification of my chkdsk utility file in Windows/Systems32. I have emailed PC Tools asking for a refund. I have had the product since Dec. 20, 2005.
Their reply was to send me a "special offer" of only $19.95 for 'File Recover'....one of their products. I am very leery right now with any PCTools product no matter what CNet or anyone else says. It showed in the initial scan that I had 3 trojans. None could be explained. I run spybot, ad-aware, AVG pro anti-virus,
SpywareBlaster, CWShredder, and did a trend micro housecall scan and showed no trojans. I have to assume they were false positives to get me to buy Spyware Doctor. Now this with my chkdsk. Worse yet no tech. support just an offer to sell me something. Anyone out there who doesn't have this product, I would recommend saving your money. It will just cause you problems.
When you are looking into a product, never base your decision on reviews.Alot of reviews are very biased.I have gone to firewall reviews and its looking at different firewalls and by the time i reach the bottom of the page, it's recommended Zonealarm 6 times already. What's up with that.Next!.The best thing to do is try to find unbiased testing. There is a good one at spywarewarrior and the results would probably surprise you. There are good ones and bad ones. But even the good ones aren't great in some areas of detection including spyware doctor. That is why you will see alot of the readers recommending running many spyware programs so hopefully they pick up each others slack.
Agree with you and I base my purchase decision on running the trial verison of the product as well as followup emails to their support department prior to purchasing the product. Regarding Spyware and Virus scanners I take their scan results with a grain of salt.
In the case of Spyware Doctor it supposedly found a Trojan on my computer that non of the other major Spyware scanners found nor did Ad-Aware, SpyBot or several commerical Trojan Scanners.
I contacted the developers of Spyware Doctor and based on the run around via email over a 2 week period, regarding this so called trojan, I promptly uninstalled the product and said to myself another ''recommended'' product bites the dust.
And it does tell you about problem cookies.
However, one would wonder about the sites you're visiting to get these alerts!
There is a function to shut down IE if you have a site that is a REAL problem.
I have that "unchecked", and it now throws up a window to tell me.
There are lots of baddies out there, SD works excellently, I am more than happy with it.
You may need to just configure it, and even add things to the "white list".
If you're getting these alerts, and you disable/uninstall it, better be prepared for some serious problems.
That's just my personal opine, and hey, I don't know squat.
ago but somebody didn't realize it and brought it back to the front page . I'm not sure of the original poster is still around and has the same problem still or not. LOL
Spyware Doctor works perfectly on all my computers but no updates since April 4th, 2006.
Has anyone had Spyware or Registry Mechanic updates to be loaded into their product recently?
