I just do my best to keep clean, and try to protect sensitive info by all of the means at my disposal. I switch protection periodicly, among all the favorites.

take classes

by 1caroline - 2/7/06 7:12 PM In reply to: Has your online behavior changed in the past two years? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I took lots of classes like online security, protecting your pc, using antivirus/antispyware software, PC updating/repair/trouble shooting. And writing cookies and spyware.I even read the hackers hand book. Everything I could get my hands on. I've learned what to fear and what is good. And don't ask me to delete my cookies. I want to log in classes, etc. Easy access, I'm in a rush.(The need for instant data transfers ie. computers and the net.) I am not paranoid any more. I can operate and function in a more normal state. Even productive. I feel if everyone educated themselves the wouldn't need to scare buy so much junk. Companies want the scare buys not to scare business away. People should relax and learn, take a coffee/class break.

I don't visit the same sites that I once did but that just because my interest have changed. Basically just read up and keep your software updated and that’s it.

No Way

by engine101 - 2/7/06 7:16 PM In reply to: Has your online behavior changed in the past two years? by Marc Bennett Moderator

By keeping up with the anti-virus software and a firewall, along with the spy/ad aware programs. My system haas not been comprimised in any way. BTW it helps to stay away from the porn sites.

HGS

Agreed!!.
99% of the time,I use only MS products. My ISP is MS using Msn Explorer Premium Service.Explorer is still the Flagship OS for MS.Has no updates, any minor changes are automatically made while your shutdown and seldom,if ever notice them when you re-boot in the morning.NO EMAILS come to you without Msn having scanned them first.Has it's own browser and enclosed email client.Click on an email and if there is an attachment(as all AOL emails come)it doesn't open until you wait for Msn to scan and give the all clear.Have yet to have/see any viruses/worms/trojans or the like with this service.Like a good MAC,it has excellant protections built in and hackers don't bother with it.Browser allows no toolbars or add-ons to give you any hassle either. One very nice thing I enjoy is the 2gb worth of storage--ON THEIR WEBSITE SERVERS,not on your computer. Thus even if you have to do a re-install,you lose nothing, soon as you sign on again, your entire emails and storage are there waiting for you.Access price is absolutely comparable to any other ISP but with 10 times the benefits, safety.Only time I ever pull up/use the IE is to search from Google for something I want.Another great feature is that my satellite/phone/internet are all on one bill and you get a reduction in fees for having the bundle.SS

A bit more carefull

by wheelzup - 2/7/06 7:23 PM In reply to: Has your online behavior changed in the past two years? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I still purchase nearly all of my PC parts online but I've learned not to jump at the lowest price I see since if it's much lower then most places it could be the old to good to be true saying. I check the place out on resellers.com and other similar services first. I'd rather pay a bit more just to know that my transaction is relativly safe.
As for general internet use I try to hide my identity unless a site I visit regulary needs to have a cookie on my hard drive. To do that I've been using Zone Alarm with what seems like some success. At least I'm not getting tons of junk email anymore.

Security Concerns are definitely heightened!!!!

by Elinorann - 2/7/06 7:37 PM In reply to: Has your online behavior changed in the past two years? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I had Nortons Suite free for 6 months from Dell when I received my new computer two years ago. My computer after a while became sluggish with pop ups etc.I was told it was viruses and adware. I started asking around for a new anti virus system that I was willing to pay for. I was advised by my tech man at the office to invest (under $35) in Bit Defender. Plus I use Webroot Spy Sweeper for adware etc.

First of all- it seems that Bit Defender and I are compatible. It works well, and if it finds a virus, it tells you so in the scan. No question like with Nortons. With Nortons if it caught a virus- I didnt know where it was located. It is very important to know where the virus is- in your computer. It must be pinpointed. Bit Defender does that.

After I got rid of Nortons, I installed Bit Defender and I immediately did a virus scan. Of course it found 2 viruses right away. I didnt know from Nortons that I had a virus in the system.

What a story- not easy- but for me Bit Defender works.
I now scan for adware daily and Bit Defender weekly.

I forgot to mention that it is impossible not to pickup a virus or adware when surfing on the internet.

This world is huge with Billions of individuals. Many wierdos out there who gleefully create these viruses.
They are sickees that won't go away unfortunately.

We must realize that we need protection on the internet:-
1) Firewall
2) Anti Virus Program
3) Anti Spyware Program
etc

You can run only 1 anti virus program at a time.
You can have more than one anti spyware program.

When I first starting using computers- I knew nothing about firewalls + anti virus etc. With Service Pack 2- you have a firewall from Microsoft and a built in pop-up blocker.
I was extremely pleased when I installed Service Pack 2. You download it from Windows Updates.

You must be diligent about policing your computer.
Consistancy is the key to success.

Good luck

Not at all.

by THE MAC GOD - 2/7/06 7:39 PM In reply to: Has your online behavior changed in the past two years? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I have a Macintosh. To date, there are no known viruses or spyware in the wild. Even the 3 or so possibilities of viruses/spyware that have come up for the Macintosh are negligeble and are not wild. They also need to be authenticated by an Administrator to work. But, I can surf the web with impunity and download pretty much anything I want...

Hate to sound like a fanboy, but truth is truth.

5 years, no viruses.

Even Vista has viruses.

I have increased my security slightly

by Bill2x - 2/7/06 8:16 PM In reply to: Has your online behavior changed in the past two years? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Now that I have a fast cable connection I have begun using a firewall. I had not felt it necessary before I started leaving my computer turned on for longer periods of time.

Online Behaviour

by nomadd74 - 2/7/06 8:20 PM In reply to: Has your online behavior changed in the past two years? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Not at all since I rely on my isp and it's wonderful junk mail protector. Catches all unwanted mail, nothing else gets through. However, I do not use music sites where most of the problems occur with leaving your computer open to others.

What I did change...

by ralphguay - 2/7/06 8:24 PM In reply to: Has your online behavior changed in the past two years? by Marc Bennett Moderator

After various little menaces devoured my PC with technobiological agents, I took the plunge and bought my first Mac...powerbook G4.

No problems since...

Too bad that MicroBill has no real interest in producing a product which will actually PROTECT his clientele.
