No thoughts

by magnogreato - 1/28/06 4:41 PM In reply to: Spyware Capabilities by leshirl

Have not tried it and/or not heard yah/nay about the beta version. I'd hate to try something that isn't bug free and have it cause a problem with my system.
I just downloaded and am using AVG Free and SpyBot and both seem to be doing ok with my Norton's Sys Works 2003. I have the email scanner on all disabled and using the scanner with my ISP, Earthlink to scan the mail as using Norton's caused a conflict with Outlook 2003 mail. Right now I'm looking for a good Utility similar and better than Norton to install and debating on acouple now. Good luck.

Anti-Spyware

by GradyPhilpott - 1/29/06 1:56 PM In reply to: Which spyware program is better? by rapunzel77gil

I use an arsenal of programs and they are all free.

Spywareblaster
Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta
Spybot S&D
Lavasoft Adaware
Spycatcher Express

I think this is the best way to go and all the professional reviews I have read indicate that paying for spyware protection is no guarantee of better protection.

antispyware beta

by benedictkhoojr - 2/1/06 8:50 AM In reply to: spyware by Ricky Koski

i have this installed since it came out. To date it has found a total of Zero spyware. Zilch. Other programs find between 3-26 small to medium risk stuff (cookies/trackers) and the occasional Trojan.
But i still have it 'just in case'. Until it becomes shareware i guess it's worth keeping.

Microsofts free antispyware

by JmboCov - 2/3/06 2:15 PM In reply to: Which spyware program is better? by rapunzel77gil

I think MS free anti spyware is the best by far. It has also gotten dramatically better since its initial beta release, and it is also frequently updated with new data files and thats good. I have pretty muched used only this for the past year or long with no problems and if I do find a program I do not recognize then I normally go to http://www.what-is-exe.com to lookup the program name. This has worked wonders for me.

what is the best malware?

I think the only answer is that no one solution is correct for everyone.

best?

by benedictkhoojr - 2/5/06 8:05 AM In reply to: Microsofts free antispyware by JmboCov

I was just wondering what the definition of 'best' means in antispyware software.
Do you mean 'best' as in it finds the MOST bugs or 'best' as in it doesn't ever find anything?
MS Antispyware finds nothing whereas others do. That makes it the worst antispyware software in my book.
I am tempted to go with Webroot SpySweeper based solely on the recommendations of other here as there is no trialware.

(an update to my earlier mail) Guess what?

by rapunzel77gil - 2/9/06 7:42 AM In reply to: Which spyware program is better? by rapunzel77gil

I used two anti-spyware programs (Ad-Aware SE and Webroot-unsubscribed) and BitDefender edi. 8. But it seemed that I was still unable to keep all the cookies and bugs out. I should never have upgraded to Windows Media Player ver. 10. Ever since then my PC's keyboard function has been disabled and the PC made a hell lot of noise too from start to every boot up. I suspect that it might be a gateway for trojan horse or malware. All three programs turned up the same diagnosis after numerous scans.

Today I tried my best to do a major clean-up of the entire system, but there's no 100% guarantee that it's free of virus and malware / spyware. My experience is testimonial of most of the advices from this online community that a cocktail of security / system protection is necessary, especially when using free products. Thanks to all the kind advices.

Micro$oft Media Player upgrade

by OmegaGeek - 2/10/06 3:00 AM In reply to: (an update to my earlier mail) Guess what? by rapunzel77gil

I've also had problems with upgrades to Media Player. And there's no way to back-out a version. The last upgrade required a paid subscription for several radio stations that had been free. Quelle suprise! I've switched to the product that came bundled with my VAIO. Much more happy.

Brian Livingston's Windows Secrets http://windowssecrets.com/ recommends Webroot Spy Sweeper http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/spysweeper/?WRSID=57695e6569f4de7d4392a9c819ec2c9e

You can find it at Office Depot for $30.

Try them all out and decide

by natalia - 2/11/06 7:55 AM In reply to: Which spyware program is better? by rapunzel77gil

I, like you, have tried several over the past 3 years. I have the usual on my computer at the moment, Spybot, Adware, Microsoft Anti Spyware Beta, Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard.

However, I have recently downloaded Spyware Catcher Express by Trenbril and am more than pleased with this application. Unlike Spyware Doctor and others of that genre, not only does Catcher Express find the nasties, it also quarantines or removes them too without subscription.

I may upgrade later, but for the moment am content with the Express version.

BTW, Spyware Guard by Javacool no longer updates.

Spyware Doctor may present terrible trouble if one decides to later uninstall. Error messages are likely to prevent its complete removal.

I am still seeking help in uninstalling it, even contacting PC Tools, the parent company without much joy except for automatic computer generated responses stating a Technical advisor will get back to me later. In other words, Spyware Doctor are really ignoring my requests for help.

I run several Anti-spyware programs

by Ray Cuss - 2/13/06 2:20 AM In reply to: Which spyware program is better? by rapunzel77gil

Ad-Aware*
Spybot*
Spy Sweeper
Spyware Doctor

Ad-Aware far-and-away catches most fish.

I have abandoned Microsoft - it never caught any.

Who would have Thunk it?

by magnogreato - 2/13/06 10:01 AM In reply to: I run several Anti-spyware programs by Ray Cuss

I just downloaded Mozilla-Firefox and lo and behold, not one pop-up has appeared. So far so good with this one. It's very similar to IE profile and stuff but all in all, it works fine so far. Right now I'm running AVG,SpywareBlaster,SpyBot S&D along with Norton's Anti-virus Sys Works 2003 and all so far are working well for me. My ISP is Earthlink but they want a monthly fee for their Maint. Control Center. What I'm now trying to do is find a VERY GOOD utility such as Norton's that will allow me to certain maintenance tasks but not such that it will take up so much room. My sub. runs out this year and if i can't find a GOOD Working Diagnostics Tool, guess I'll stay with Norton's. ANY IDEAS OR FEED BACK ABOUT THE LATTER?
THANKS

You don't NEED a third party 'maintenance utility'...

by btljooz - 2/16/06 6:33 PM In reply to: Who would have Thunk it? by magnogreato

You can do everything you need to within Windows. You don't say what version you use......

reply to 'Maintenance Utility'

by magnogreato - 2/18/06 4:40 AM In reply to: You don't NEED a third party 'maintenance utility'... by btljooz

thanks for response, but I don't feel that windows provides a "totally effective" way to go. I'm using WinXP Home Ed SP2 with Office 2003 SP2 and Norton's does allow me to manipulate a lot of things on the maintenance side, wereas, windows doesn't. They each handle file maintenance, arrangements, options differently but Nortons takes up a "lot of space" which i feel could be reduced by another Utility that could do the same or better job of it, but I can't find one yet.
