Can't load .gif's

by caktus - 12/14/05 8:24 PM

For two days now about 19 out of 20 .gif's don't load. Not even innocent screenshots in various tutorial sites that I frequent, ad links, or navigation links unless it is not a .gif. Usually all I get is a box with a place holder (red X), even when I attempt to hotlink to them. jpg, png, jpng, bmp, etc load just fine.

I have run currently updated AVG, S&D, ewido, MS Ant-spyware, Adaware and came up clean.

I have also tried disabling proxy, ad blocking, and popup blocking devices.

I'm also running running Windows XP Home Edition, IE6 SP2, ZA.

I hope someone can help me fix this. It's starting to drive me nuts since about half the images on the Net are .gif's.

Thanks.

(NT) Forgot. the ZA is Free, not Pro.

Drastic measures

Hi caktus. By reading your other posts I know you're a smart guy. Therefore I assume you know all about the risks of using regedit irresponsibly. This fix is offered by Microsoft with the disclaimer "to use at own risk."
1.Quit Internet Explorer, if it is running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type Regedit, and then press ENTER.
4. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif
5. Double-click the Content Type value in the right pane of the Registry Editor.
6. In the Edit String dialog box, type image/gif in the Value Data box, and then click OK.

(NT) Thanks, but Content Type value was already image/gif

As a matter of interest,

Does Windows Explorer show gif's as images when you find them on your hard drive? And can you load any gif's from your hard disk into MSPaint?

If not, this may indicate a further problem, not just a web page problem.

We then know where to start looking, (hopefully).

Yes, Windows Explorer shows gif's as images when I find them on the hard drive. And I can load gif's from the hard disk into MSPaint.

I can also save gif's from web pages (i.e. the ''CNET'S My Products'' gif on the right side of this page.

My proxy is set to block ad banners and animated gif's, but even w/o these settings the problem persists.

caktus, If you haven't done this recently go into your Internet Options and under the General tab click the Delete Files button and when the popup window appears checkmark the "delete all offline content" box and click OK.

Had same problem with some gifs loading as first post here:

by joetom - 2/3/06 7:54 AM In reply to: As a matter of interest, by MarkFlax Moderator

Hi there:

Ok I had the same problem with one of my gifs loading as all that would show was just the red x and all of my other gifs that I have on my webpages loaded just fine with no problem.

I saw about that windows update of KB905915 abd yes I did have it as it was listed in the add and remoce programs listing under control panel. So I went and removed this update and restarted my computer and then tried getting my webpage again with the gif on it and yippe it loaded just fine with no problems.

Now I do have windows xp sp2 here. And I do have plenty of ram memory. And also yes I dp usually take all of the updates whenever they are released and whenever windows update lets me know about them.

Also I had went to microsoft.com and went the Internet Explorer home page and clicked on the link for the new version if IE which is 7.0 and currently what it is out now is Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta 2. So it is still in Beta testing, I had downloaded it. The download is a litle over 11mb and so with a dialup connection it would take awhile. But I have DSL here now and so it did not take me that long to download it. I had installed it and later I had tried to get download.com and download.com did not load right. So I went the add and remove programs and uninstalled it and now download.com will load right like it is suppsoed too. So go figure on that one, Maybe they will get that problem solved before the final release of IE 7.0.

Now I also have the problem of this one gif image not loading and showing in windows explorer and no it will load in MSPaint either or will it load in the Microsoft Picture Viewer either as I just can never see the image. It is a image that i have on my memorial webpage that I did as a memorial for the World Trade Center and Pentagon and the Crash in PA for the victims of 0-11. If you would like to see it. You can go here to:
http://www.angelfire.com/wizard/artomcat/ and click on the picture image of the twin towers of which is the link to my memorial page and the image right under that first image is the one that was not loading and showing up at all for me here and I have it saved in a folder here on my computer and it is the one that just will load in either windows explorer or MSPaint.

That is it will not show in Windows Explorer if I was to click on the view menu button and click on thumbnails instead of having my files show as Tiles when it is set to show as Tiles. But then again set to show as Tiles things do show up just fine like they are supposed to.

Also whenever I would right click on this image that I have this problem with here and click on props. and click on like the summery tab it shows the pixels as 1 x 1 and I really don't believe that is right for this cretain image here as both of those number should be a higher number instead of 1 x 1. So go figure on that one too.

So I am wondering as to just what my problem could be here on this. If anyone out there knows something about this and might could offer some help of any kind, Then Please do email me here at joetom57@msn.com and I will get back to you ASAP. Thanks in advnace for any help on this that anyone can give or has out there or for any info about this that might can help me out there. Oh yeah I do consider myself a pretty good troubleshooter here in trying to figure things out and trying to find out just whatever the problem is with something anything.

That's it for now. Take care till later. :-)

I uninstalled it from Add/Remove programs in the control panel.

Is ''Show updates'' at the top of your Add/Remove programs checked.

The only other Update I downloaded at the same time is KB910437 but it is still installed with no ill effects.

This MS bullitin seems to mention some security fixes that are included in KB905915 but I don't really understand it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905915

Hope you get it fixed.

Glad you got it sorted.

I haven't updated from M$ yet as I wanted to see if there were any issues.

I'm glad you sorted your problem out caktus.
