I've been using Trend Micro Anti-Spyware 3. for the last nearly two years. It's been a great defender for me all this time. However, upon receiving definitions updates recently, a smaller "Upgrade" window popped up. That was my day to be a sucker, so I accepted. Here's the funny part; Trend Micro caught the About:Blank browser hijacker, but in a state of confusion (my only excuse), I "allowed" it in. Argh!! STILL trying to get rid of this bad boy! I alerted Trend Micro, but they didn't seem too interested in what I had to say. Boy, I've learned my lesson, I'm ONLY getting updates, etc when I GO to their site, NOT when they come to my computer. Beware!

I've never config'd software to automatically download much less install anything. Micro$oft sure makes it hard to stop XP from doing that. Even more so after SP2.

by DavidAnderson - 1/27/06 5:14 PM In reply to: Which spyware program is better? by rapunzel77gilI've tried several--especially the freebees. I seem to have found something which works--all free. When I scan, I begin with Yahoo anti-spy which comes free with their tool bar.
From there, I go to Microsoft Anti-spyware (a.k.a. GIANT Anti-Spyware Main Application.)
I follow that with Gristof AVG Free and finish up with Spybot Search and Destroy.
It may sound over-complicated or like overkill, but some just don't get all the invaders. By using these, AND IN THAT ORDER, I've been able to knock out literally everything the NET has thrown at me--including the infamous Spy Sheriff. Just an example of teamwork paying off.

Even with the best programs, some of the garbage is going to get through.
Normally, I sequence the operation at random times manually. I go to one--finish it out and then go down the list. However, each does have a schedular on it. Simpy set the times on the individual schedulars so that they run in sequence. This is especially helpful if the computer is left on at all times and you can schedule the sweep for when you aren't normally on it. When you come back, they will all have reports sitting there waiting for you and asking what to do. Go down the sequence and take out the trash.

My Anti-Spyware choice

The program is called XoftSpy, version 4.25 by Pareto Logic,Inc. The website is xoftspy.com. The purchase price, after a free scan of your computer and the price is one-time. (29 bucks) All definition downloads and upgrades are free. They also have been running a free-trial promo, whereby a fully functional program is downloaded by you. After a few days, if you like it -- you buy it. On the expire date of the trial, it contiunes throughout the last day and gives you the option of buying it and receiving an unlock code. It uses about 1% of system resources, or you can use it manually to scan your drive whenever. It is very user friendly and support is there at the drop of a pin for any question whatsoever. Its interface is available in many languages, not just in English.
When installed with Teatimer, a solid monitoring tool, it does a very good job.
Two inprovements would be welcomed:
1/ an automatic update function
2/ the buttons in the alarm windows are partly covered
(you get used to it)
For the rest: just follow the right sequence:
update>immunize>search & destroy

I also like its powerful configuration utility, whic lets you dig deep into how the program behaves. But instead of using Spybot to inmunize my system, I use Spywareblaster to protect web browsers from hacking.
It has turned out to be a very nice combo

#2. Spybot is aware of the graphic problem and is working on a fix for it in the next version of Spybot.
In the mean time...to Allow a change simply press 'A' on your keyboard...to Disallow a change press 'D' on your kb... the place where you check for the program to remember your desision still works just fine.
