I have been wondering about the differences myself. I purchased 100 DVD+r's and are useless in my burner. I will only purchase the DVD-R's until I swap out my dvd burner. Although It is a 6 in 1 burner. Can't find the box to see what formats it will use. Thanks for the details. I surely appreciate the knowledge and will share with others what you posted.
Thank you for finally explaining it in laymans terms!
I purchased an LG DVD burner (glad to see it's one of your honourable mentions). When I went to buy the Discs I constantly got incomplete information... or they were overloading me with useless information at rapid fire speed! In the few minutes it took to read your explanation - I finally got ALL the answers I needed. Salespeople tend to forget that they need to simplify there answers! Simple is Best!
thanks! Nancy F - Hamilton, On

Im running a high performence 3yr old HP Media Edition
PC. I have 1 CD-Rom Drive, And 1 DVD player/writer/that supports CD Writing..And that setup
Gives me limited ways to burn or copy From sourse...Main Problem; I cannot burn to Dvd unless the file source has been finalized by a DVD Recorder.
So short of buying a new pc that has a combo CD/Rom-Dvd/Player..is there anything I can do,EX. buy an external DVD player That will work with My Existing Dvd Writer,or am I stuck with what a 3yr old PC that does just about everything else I want it to do? Tfaz29 {limited Budget}Thanks. Can we Demystify This all to common problem?
This discussion could not have come at a better time.
I just jumped into the DVD burner wagon too and I could not be more confused...
My current task at hand is how to make a bootable copy of a boot CD software to a DVD boot software.
I have an LG DVD burner that came with Nero6 Express.
I create an image of the bootable cd on to my hardrive.
Then I try to burn that image onto a DVDR and nero wont do it due to the mismatch in ISOs.
How could I accomplish this?
The reason behind all these... My laptop DVD-CDRW drive is half dead, it would only read DVDs at this point.
I have heard that commercially recorded movies have coding to prevent copying. Is that so? If not what is the best format for recording movies for my personal collection. Also, does this apply to recording off of cable or sattelite?
I'm confused. I know that there is DVD+ and DVD-. Does DVD +/- mean that it will play/record either the + and - format, or is DVD +/- a separate format altogether?
Thanks!
Would love to see a discussion on the best DVD burning programs out there. Some are very confusing to use.
Lee,
Nice job on your answer, very clear and to the point. I was surprised you didn't include Plextor in you recommendation list. Thanks for the info. Bob
From what I'm seeing here, different brands of DVD's can have different results? I have burned DVD -R and played them on my home DVD player with no problem. Until I saw generic STAPLES DVD -R on sale $7 for 50. I bought 100. Come to find that my home DVD player will not recognize these, even though it has played other brands of -R. I feel ripped off, is that what I get for buying cheap DVD's?
Make sure it can play DivX files. If you have a PC or even access to one (and who doesn't) you'll thank me for this tip, Cross everything off your list that can't play DivX
