firewall extremely slow to load

by bently - 1/27/06 9:24 AM

using XP home, all updates, sp2

In past several months when I boot the computer, it takes several minutes after the desktop shows for the firewall to load.

I have tried Zone Alarm, 2 different times; Kerio Personal Firewall, v2.1.4, 2.1.5, 4.1.3, 4.2.0, and 4.2.2. Currently using Kerio 2.1.5.

I have FORMATTED twice with clean install of everything.

I have changed from AVG to AVAST, and the same problem exists. Zone Alarm or Kerio, they all take several minutes to load after the Desktop shows.

I know it will take several minutes so now I play a game of Freecell while waiting for the firewall to load.

This is a relatively new, a few months back this was not a problem, computer loaded firewall MUCH faster then.

I have ran scans with AVG, Avast, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Ewido, CW Shredder, MS AntiSpy, CCleaner, and a few others, (all with updates before running) Only a few tracking cookies is all that has been found which I removed.

Is there anyway to get the firewall to load faster?

Thanks

Ben

YOU'RE NOT ALONE, BEN

HAVE VIRTUALLY THAT SAME ISSUE WITH THE SAME EQUIPT (WIN XP/SP2 WITH A VERY CLEAN MACHINE, AS WELL.

HAVE HAD THE PROBLEM WITH ZONE ALARM AND RE-INSTALLED AS YOU HAVE. IT WOULD APPEAR, HAVING READ OTHER REMARKS ON OTHER CHAT SITES THAT THE SLOW LOADING ( OF ZONE ALARM, ANYWAY ) IS SIMPLY THE NATURE OF THE BEAST INHERANT IN THE LATEST VERSION. AS TO THE OTHER FIREWALLS, CAN'T SAY.

DID WHAT YOU HAD DONE, EXACTLY ( LESS THE RE-FORMATTING )
HAVE RUN SPY-SWEEPER, BIT DEFENDER ( NOT A FAN OF THE ZONE LABS ANTIVIRUS ) AND OTHER APP'S....THE SLOW LOADING REMAINS.

A non-problem. Here's why.

The firewall 'service' loads as the OS boots. The little icon does not show until later. While Symantec has an article about this issue, many continue to think that without the icon the firewall has not loaded.

It's sad that the firewall vendors don't have this article handy, but it's a common misconception.

boot info

by bently - 1/29/06 11:07 AM In reply to: A non-problem. Here's why. by R. Proffitt Moderator

Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Field Service Pack 2
CPU Type AMD Athlon, 1333 MHz (10 x 133)
Motherboard Name MSI KM2M Combo (MS-6738) (3 PCI, 1 AGP, 2 SDR DIMM, 2 DDR DIMM, Audio, Video)
System Memory 512 MB (PC2100 DDR SDRAM)

When I boot the computer, and KERIO loads, I then have to click on ''DSL/CONNECT''. It will NOT work if the Kerio icon is not showing at the taskbar.

Start Menu is CLASSIC, and according to MSConfig/Startup, only 2 items are loading, both for AVAST av.

I do not have any anti-spyware program running full time. I have to start each one when I want to use them. They conflicted with each other so I uninstalled them and reinstalled to run only when I want them.

As mentioned in first post, I accept that it will take time and now I get to play freecell every day, while waiting for Kerio to load. I was hoping for a magic bullet.

Thanks

Ben

Hi Ben, Firewall loading slow..

by Larry38 - 1/29/06 12:01 PM In reply to: boot info by bently

I have an HP PC WXP Home SP2, use Avast Free, Kerio latest paid version, also have MSAS and Ewido Plus running Realtime, also have dialup.
Checked mine the other day, since I shut it down each night, and it took approx. 2 minutes to load everything to the point I could dialup the internet.

Not really. It is something to understand.

The VSMON (truevector) Service loads well before the tray icon and that is where the firewall is. Not the tray icon.

It's a common misconception that the firewall vendors do document so we don't have to worry.

Turn off non-crucial services

by bglover51 - 1/30/06 7:28 AM In reply to: Not really. It is something to understand. by R. Proffitt Moderator

The best way to get a faster boot (and have your firewall icon appear quicker) is to turn off all non-essential MS Windows services.

All XP machines by default load victually every service built into XP. In truth, most users never have a need for 75% of these services. You can safely turn off the ones you do not need and cut your bootime by 30-50% easily.

There are several articles on the web about this. Here is one I used:

http://www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp

You'll be amazed how much quicker your pc is ready to go if you do this... just follow the instructions.

Turn off non-crucial services, that speeded it up

Did all the recommendations that seemed appropriate for my computer.

Shut down time less than 10 seconds.

Reboot time less than 30 seconds to get to desktop, 15 seconds for Kerio to load.

Thanks

Ben
