XP is on the way out, Vista is coming in. Windows new operating system fully supports dual core technology and it's right around the corner, folks!
My reason for getting dual core: in 2000 I bought the most advanced, expensive laptop I could afford at the time, a Sony Vaio Z505. This baby is still running with a new 60G harddrive, memory upgrade and no other maintainence. I've gotten almost 6 years out of my initial investment (plus the $100 or so I put into it). I could probably run this thing for another 4 or 5 years but it doesn't have a working battery, has only USB 1.0, and has an external wireless card and CD drive (a pain to lug around!). My Pentium III processor has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it. The only reason I'm upgrading to the new Sony Vaio SZ series is to avoid the hassle of having this one die on me (bound to happen sooner or later). I've been holding out for the dual core model.
So, the lesson I learned was to get the most advanced laptop you can afford and hang on to it until it dies. I've had good luck so far!
Thanks for this post I found it very interesting. I have a question maybe someone can answer. WIll the SZ Vaio dual-cores run Vista. I thought they had to be 64bit dual core.
