System Failed due to CPU overclocking

by kibitzer31 - 1/22/06 10:06 AM

Let me set the scene.

I have an ASUS A8V Deluxe Mobo. An AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU. I don't think anything else is relevant.

I also have Dual 512 MB sticks of RAM, and then another 512 MB stick of RAM, so three total, two the same one different.

My problem is, whenever I try to load up my computer with both sets of RAM, I get an annoying voice saying "System failed due to CPU Overclocking". It will work with just the dual channel ram, or just the single ram, but not both together.

I have no Idea why it is doing this, and am relatively new to computers, so any help would be appreciated.

Might need another 512 RAM stick

I would first call or check out manufacturers support site.
I had a Dell that had four memory slots and it would only work with 2 or 4 slots filled. Not 3.

Ram timings / speed

by dlandry - 1/22/06 11:13 AM In reply to: System Failed due to CPU overclocking by kibitzer31

It is very likley that the other 512MB stick of RAM you have is a different speed or different timings, so it's confusing the BIOS.

If the timings and speed are not on the outside of the RAM, you can check with a program like sisoft sandra. Boot once with the dual sticks and check, and then boot once with the single stick and check.

If they are differnet there's nothing you can really do about it except buy a new stick with the right speed/timings.

Speeds?

Both are DDR 400, PC 3200. Those are the speeds/timing, correct?

RAM Problem

by CG-TG - 1/24/06 7:44 PM In reply to: System Failed due to CPU overclocking by kibitzer31

Since they work by themselves, check your ASUS manual about the memory banks. They might have to be in certain slots. Also, is the RAM identical? I have had strange problems show up on systems by introducing a cheap stick of RAM (PNY). As soon as I removed the RAM, all the problems went away, but running the PNY stick by itself, the system ran fine. They just did not play well together. I always recommend people by Crucial ram simply because they have a great website for selecting RAM, they have decent prices, and a lifetime warranty.

If both sticks worked together previously, one may be getting ready to have a problem, and it only shows the problem during interleaving. After that, I would start asking questions if you are over clocking or anything like that, try the base system settings. You ASUS board should be very good at detecting your default settings. Make sure it picked up the correct timing for your memory (see the manual). Also, are you running the latest BIOS for the motherboard?

If you were over clocking the system, try some different RAM in there.
