I'm in the market for a 50 in monitor for hometheather applications. I had been looking strongly at the TH-50PHD8UK model for several reasons: its gotten great reviews, its a stripped down Monitor (I don't need a tuner or speakers). I was close to set on buying one, when i saw the TH-50PM50U at Costco for $3000. This seems to be a similar idea as the "profesional" series in the sense that it doesn't come with a tuner. There are a few other differences concerning inputs, but they are similarly priced at low 3000's.
My main question is that since they are both 8th gen plasmas with specs that seem identical. Is it safe to assume the TH-50PM50U (which has no reviews readily available) has similar/same picture quality as the TH-50PHD8UK which we have heard such great things about?
Both models are discribed on the Panasonic homepage. the former under consumer products and the later under "professional"
Thanks for any help
Yes, you should find that the picture quality is the same. The TH-50PM50U is almost identical to the TH-50PX50U (you should be able to find lots of pro and user reviews on this model) except for no tuner.
The two models you mentioned have the same glass panel and scaling circuits, etc. with differences in bells and whistles, features, connectors, no speakers, etc.
Check out the specs and owner's manuals for the small details at Panasonic.

You pretty much answered yourself.
One is the profession/industrial -PHD8UK
A much cleaner picture. It has a better black and contrast on this unit than the consumer version. Brighter colors...
I would go with the 8UK by far...
Even looks better to the eye. slim black cabinet.
You probably have a surround sound to go with it and a cable box or satelitte, so you dont need the consumer wastes that only add to the price.
You only need to purchase the HDMI for the 8UK.
Installs easy so you can then plug in your DVD or whatever you want for highest quality picture.
Hope that helps
I got mine from DTVCITY.com - authorized dealer and has the industrial model....
good luck
ladolce is basically correct. There is also one significant difference: The consumer model can apply different aspects (normal, justify, zoom, full) to HD signals. The industrial model can only do this with 480p or 480i signal.
A previous poster said that the two models share the same panel. If I understand you correctly you're saying the industrial model has a better panel. Now which one is correct? Or is it just that the consumer model needs some tweaking out of the box?
THanks...
