Newbie needs some help building an HP....Please
by RealtorKen - 1/19/06 5:36 AMOk, as you can see I am in a business that people are going to be looking at my laptop screen a lot. So I am choosing the 17" monitor for the HP ZD8000. I am not a tech junkie, so I don't need a new laptop every year...I will probably have this for 2+ years and I don't want it to be too outdated by then.
Now that being said, I could use some help on the following:
MONITOR-
WSXGA (1680x1050) vs. WXGA (1440x900)
I have been leaning towards the 1680x1050..Smart Choice? Is it going to be a viewable difference when watching movies?
Video Card
128MB ATI Radeon X600 vs. 256MB ATI Radeon X600
Nowadays, I don't get too much time to play games...Might play Half Life for little here and there. Mostly gonna be movies, home videos, and presentations on this puppy.
SO, would the $75 for the 256 be justified in my use?
PROCESSOR
Now this lappy comes in 2.8, 3, 3.2, 3.4 (my current home is <2Ghz) Is it going to be a noticeable difference between the 3Ghz and the 3.4Ghz. Also I heard that all the 6XX processors will mostly run at 2.7 to conserve power. Is this true? Is the $130 difference between a 3Ghz and a 3.4Ghz worth it?
I appreciate your help in this! I will be ordering it by next week.

by togus - 1/19/06 6:20 AM In reply to: Newbie needs some help building an HP....Please by RealtorKenP4 processor, which is a desktop processor and likely the worst choice for a notebook (P4s run hot and use much more battery power than chips designed for mobile use). Don't let the Ghz rating fool you, a Pentium Mobile (P-M) runs almost twice as fast as a P4 due to more efficient design, a 2Ghz P-M will out perform a P4 running at 3.4 Ghz... Turions aren't quite as fast but still much better than a P4. Look at the Dv8000 that has a 64 bit Turion if you want a machine with the 17 inch screen. If you have a number of people looking at the screen at the same time the higher res. monitor might be a problem as the size of images will be reduced. I have a WXGA display on my Dv4000 (the lower res. of the two you're looking at) and it presents very well, crisp and sharp with nice colors. As for the video card, I'd recommend getting the best GPU you can find and balancing the cost by getting the lowest amount of ram you can from the factory and buying after market ram from Newegg or Tiger Direct... the savings there will pay for the better GPU.
