Couldn't agree with you more...

the high end TVs they're selling these days are rediculously priced and unless they are 4 or 5 grand...I just don't see how these lcds and plasmas are all that. I've been in the stores. Half of these things you have to be directly in front of to see a good picture. I have a 32" Sony Trinitron (flat one way) that I bought new in '99. It's not going anywhere until it turns up with a black screen one day. Satellite IS by far the best picture. Analog cable absolutely stinks in my area (Raleigh, NC) and the digital package on cable has the first 100 channels still analog! DTV or Dish is the way to go. The picture is either perfect or it's off. No in-betweens.

Mine is a Mitsubishi 62" rear projection with DLP. Great picture & this is my 2nd Mitsubishi big screen TV. My last Mitsubishi was a 45" projection set & I had it for 19 years without any problems & was still playing when I decided to replace it.

New LCD 32" TV

by papagramy - 1/18/06 6:31 AM In reply to: My main TV set at home is: by Marc Bennett Moderator

We bought a new tv for the sunroom which we spend 90% of our time. We bought a 32" LCD Vizio from Sam's Club. We bought the extra 3 year warranity for $79.03 plus it had a 1 year warranity plus we are a Sam's Plus member so we got an extra year's warranity so total we have a 5 year parts and labor warranity. The tv was brought back and repaired for a buzzing in the sound that was bought for Christmas and they let us have it for $600.00. So total with the warranity was $679.03 plus tax. It has a Great picture so we feel like we got a Great deal. What do you think?

Samsung 507w DLP 50''

Great TV. Onkyo sr501 for sound

Sony DHG-hdd500 DVR into Component 1 & Optical Audio
Using both Cable and Antenna for Off air local HD
Motorola HDT101 into Component 2 & Coax Audio
Antenna for off Air local hd
Samsung 931 DVD into DVI and Optical Audio
Proscan VCR from cable into TV's NTSC tuner & 2 channel Audio
Leapfrog broadcast from my Media center PC w/ntsc tuner in the office

I won't be upgrading the TV for a while. It's awesome. What I will probably do however is upgrade my Onkyo to an Outlaw 1070 which had dvi 2 to 1 switching so I can use the dvi connector on back of the sony. The 1070 also has tons of connections on the back which do not share a designation (like dvi 1 and component 1 mapped to the same place).

Why do I tell you this? Because as soon as I do this, I'm going to have to invest in a whole mess of cable to have all my audio and video switching done on the receiver so that I can hide all my remotes. I have a universal remote to control everything now, but the samsung forces you to go round robin through all the video inputs (you can't select component 1 by just hitting a component 1 button). Once I do that I'll be in heaven. I believe that there is a difference upgrading analog cables from the ones that you get with the components to at a minimum Monster. I did see a huge difference when I changed my component cables on the Moto box from the included ones to a set of Monster premium cables. I switched back and forth a couple of times just to make sure I wasn't seeing things and then had my wife take a look (without telling her which one is which). She picked the right one.

BTW, this setup replaced my Sony 27'' Trinitron, which was a beautiful CRT TV. It served us flawlessly for 12 years and 2 weeks before I got the samsung I bought the Moto tuner hooked into it and it was truly amazing even the old technology benefitted from OTA broadcasts.

Conclusion, upgrade from the cables you get with the unit to the mid-level Monster at least. After that, it's really like wine, only the true connoisseur can tell..and I ain't one of them yet.

Rear projection large screen Mitsubishi HD and HD Toshibas to plain old Sharp 27" CRT (inexpensive, no frills but decent picture) right down to my favorite....a 13" Sansui with a built in VCR which is AC/12 volt DC powered. When I'm camping in the back of my truck at 10,000 ft+ that little Sansui always does the trick when I want to watch a movie in the middle of nowhere. No frills is better than no tube at times!
