Just power down, install the PCI Firewire card, boot up and enjoy.

As a whole it is very easy. Things to make sure of:
-You have an extra PCI slot
-You can open your case (some companies use pop-rivets which makes it doable but a pain)
-Your card is compatible
So here's what you do:
1. Open Computer after you've turned it off
2. Remove the slot cover from the back of the case to the corresponding PCI slot (they're usually the whiteish colored ones)
3. Insert Firewire card into slot
4. Screw the card into the case (same as where you removed the cover from)
5. Close up the case and turn on computer
There's lots to choose from in terms of cards. If you also need USB 2.0 ports I suggest this (as a budget card)

In case you aren't sure most things use Firewire 400; Firewire 800 is only for high-end external hardrives and such. The only computers I am aware of that comes with those standard are Apple's PowerMacs (G5 and higher) and Powerbooks.
