The Toshiba 56MX195 or the SONY KDS-R50XBR1

by ufmo - 12/30/05 6:18 AM

I have long forgotten about plasma because I don't have the cash to replace it every time you loose a pixel or a heath meter from HALO is burned in. Once something goes wrong with a plasma you might as well get a new one. Anyway that aside I have narrowed my search down to these two TVs but im not sure which to buy. The Toshiba 56MX195 is a nice true 1080p DLP (when its available) set. It has all the same connections as the Sony KDS-R50XBR1 and without the draw backs of the Sony LCD rear projections, But every time I see the two side by side in a store (I know i know don't judge it in a store because its not properly hooked up) the Sony looks clearer but still has the digitation (made up word, you get the point) problem when explosions and fast moving objects are on the screen. Toshiba is more vibrant and colorful but it seems to have trouble pulling from the same source as the Sony is in the store meaning the picture looks a bit blocky. Don't get me wrong these are probably the two best rear projects out there and look incredible when hooked up to a dvd directly and probably more so through HDMI cables. Take a look at these two sets for everyone’s sake because cnet is dragging their keister a bit on the DLPs and Toshiba in general. My question to you guys is which should I buy and if nether then what TV in the 3000 to 3500 dollar range should I get this season. I want something that i can live with for about 10 years.
Thanks
Morgan

Two great television sets, but apples and oranges.......

The Toshiba is indeed a DLP (Texas Instruments) set with a great picture. If you're leaning toward this set then you should check out some of Samsung's DLP models for comparison.

The Sony KDS-R50XBR1(SXRD), is not really a LCD; but rather Sony's version of LCoS technology. If you like the Sony, I'd also take a look at some of JVC's LCoS sets (they pioneered this technology) as they are less expensive, in general.

If I had the bucks I'd grab the SONY SXRD 50''. The picture is fanastic.(60" available too.)

I broke down and went with the Sony and i am not disappointed at all. Yeah some of the standard channels are kind of grainy but that will be true for any high end TV. The HD channels are out of this world this includes that network channels. Like Surface was on and you could see all the imperfections on the sets and the actors and actresses faces. The HD DVD the bought to go with it works wonders as well with this TV and must i say the XBOX looks great. I did have difficulty with my computer hook up but that wasn't Sony’s fault it was mine. I will give a more detailed review of this product after a little longer use but so far it was a wise decision an expensive one but worth it if you use multimedia on a large scale like myself. Stay tuned. E-mail me anytime.

I am glad you are pleased with the SXRD set; there are so many models & manufs out there, it really is difficult to choose. Sony did a nice job with this set.

The way they put the speakers on the Sony makes it to wide for my cabinet.

I want the 50' sxrd bad but it won't fit in my built-in entertainment center either because of the speakers. Really wish they would make them removable or put them on the bottom. I need 2 inches, that's not asking too much is it? ;)

too big

you should really just sell your entertainment center and get a smaller more open top center. They look better then the wall of funature. Plus I'll say it again when you buy an expensive tv you should build the room around the tv not the TV around the furniture.

TOO WIDE

When TVs cost more then the furniture you should always build the room around the TV. Besides you should shop for TVs that way.
