I've never had a virus so far. No idea why so many people have problems. I just use Windows automatic updates, free AVG antivirus, free ZoneAlarm and free MS antispyware. I also think my Earthlink ISP filters viruses before they get to my computer.
I havent had any in 2005 I keep everything updated and dont download anything suspisious.
I use Norton at home and Trend in the office. I keep all up the systems up to date with Microsoft security patches. In addition to the anti-virus programs, I have installed Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster and run AdAware every few weeks. Last but not least I also use Spy Sweeper. It takes time to keep everything updated, but it is a lot better than loosing a lot of important information.
EVERY day I receive about 20-40 viruses in my private (not web)email. The latest attacks over the last 2 months are seemingly from the cia, the fbi, telling me I am looking at "illegal" websites, or I receive email well known compamy web sites saying I registered and they are confirming,(which I did not). I also get suppossed return of email I did not even send, saying it failed to be sent, etc, etc. Often (every few days)I get 50 emails or more blank, dated the year 1899. So when I look at my mail, 98% of the 120 or more emails I get daily are viruses and worms, or junk mail selling drugs or sex. 50% have attachments and are viruses. THANK YOU to "email remover" a small program I downloaded from download.com. I can preview my mail on the server, and delete all the mail I do not want to come in to my inbox. When I open my outlook express I get the 2 or 3 emails I expect, and no viruses affect me. If I want to recheck my mail after being online for awhile though I have to close outlook then use email remover again , then reopen outlook. What a pain, but worth it. Why do I get so much virused email. I do not get it in my hotmail acct.
None this past year. I religiously clean my system with the anti-virus, spybot, and avast every day. If I knew one more free or shareware anti-virus, I would get it and run it daily.
It gripes my butt to have to do it, but such is the sinful nature of the world. I am a priest.

No secret but both all are free...
AVG Virus scan
ZoneAlarm Firewall
and regular scans with Ad-Aware and Spybot
Some nasty stuff tried to get in but AVG and ZoneAlarm killed it.
Well, I need to qualify the assertion in my subject line. As a sentimentalist and a packrat I have been unable to part with any of my computers--or, for that matter, any passed on by my late dad. As a result I have every Windows platform from 3.1 to XP, a range of Apples and even a couple of old DOS-based boxes. I do admit to having Norton on my XP machine, but none other has any virus protection whatsoever. NONE. To date I remain worm- and virus-free. WHY? Well, it's a no-brainer and I'm repeating the repeated: RESIST CURIOSITY. Email attachments--even from friends--are IGNORED and NEVER opened. ALL SPAM is trashed. If someone sends an attachment that I NEED, I will open it only on my XP machine that pre-screens it. Otherwise I can live without it. Draconian, maybe. Fool-proof--you bet. As to Mac--it's not quite accurate that Mac's can't spread viruses, because I regularly got infected word files from co-workers. But as to the hackers out there doing their best to screw things up--seems Windows is their portal of choice.
First, SBC Yahoo DSL provides a server-based e-mail virus scanner that traps all or most viruses attached to e-mails, removes the offending attachment (or the entire e-mail), and leaves a notice that it has done so.
Second, they provide a free online protection package containing antivirus and antispyware software as well as a parental controls package and pop-up blocker. From this package, I use the antivirus and antispyware software.
I also use the ZoneAlarm firewall plus Ad-Aware/Ad-Watch and Spybot-SD spyware detectors.
All of the above are kept as updated as possible via the auto-update features provided. Occasionally a minor spyware item slips through the real-time scanners (usually a tracking cookie or the like), but these are caught and removed by the scans that I run at least weekly (generally those items that are caught are inconsequential).
Of course something may have slipped through that none of the scanners detects initially, but I suspect that these items are caught within a short period of time as the scanners are updated.
No virus or spyware (except cookies which are cleaned off manually) on this machine in 2005 and can remember last which was a virus in Nov 2004,easily cleaned off useing the F-Prot AV Scanner.
My internet use is heavy and i get quite a few emails also.
CNET asks whats my secret and i have none really,but this machine is set up like this;
Ubuntu/Linux is main opperating system and most internet access and all emailing done from that.F-Prot antivirus mainly to protect Windows is run from Ubuntu/Linux.Occasionally i update AdAware in Windows to check that for spyware. In both Windows and Ubuntu/Linux i run a decent firewall,Sygate in Windows and IPTables in Ubuntu. When the machine is not in use it is shutdown and the broadband modem switched off at mains.I keep Ubuntu fully updated with the security updates.
Best Wishes Chris.
I have been using NTL's Netguard antivirus programme for some 9 months and while I have imported viruses (unintentionally) from p2p programmes ,Netguard has always stopped them dead in their tracks and either disinfected the file or deleted it with no havoc to my system . The programme is free with ntli's broadband and is always on and always up to date . i think that the programme may be available to buy and is from Radialpoint .
My secret of survival: I'm a mac-user !
I use Norton and AVG Free version plus Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE (Free). I keep all up to date manually (although automatic update is set on - they don't work reliably in my experience). AVG has an update nearly every day - sometimes weekends. Norton generally gets one out each week - occasionally two. Lavasoft seem to have updates two of three times a week for Ad-Aware.
Surprisingly AVG seems to sit alongside Norton OK -for me anyway. I have the AVG email virus scanner off as it seems to take hold of things a bit too much for my liking. Norton seems to zap the email viruses effectively.
I also zap all the cookies on a regular basis although Ad-aware probably deals withn the worst anyway.
So far, so good!
Who knows - this probably the principle line of defence!
I do not use IE or Outlook, I switched years ago to avoid much of the attacks that come on that software. I also have a firewall, anti virus software, and Ewido security suite, plus a couple of different anti spyware programs. So for 2005 I did not suffer any downtime due to virus attack on my machine.
I keep my virus definitions up-to-date. A virus scan is run when I visit new or questionable web sites (1hour 45 minutes). This year Norton anti-virus has detected and cleared all of 1 Trojan. This was caught immediately after performing a Web "Search". A search will lead you to some places that you shouldn't be; accept that you won't know it until it's too late.
