Look, a lot of folks run anti-virus and other mitigation programs which prevent malware from becoming a problem on their computers. I figure if the malware gets to my computer, it's infected. The good news is that the infection is fixed promptly by my anti-virus programs. No I don't keep a log of all the times infections get cured, I don't care. This is a silly poll.
I have had no problems with any of these. I use Zonealarm Pro and AVG 7.1 Professional along with Adaware, Spybot, and Microsoft Antispyware. Of course, one has to run these also to keep clean.
Thanks to my son's voyueristic surfing I have been trying for over a week to get rid of SpyAxe. I have tried a gamut of remedies including Spyware Doctor and MS AntiSpyware. Both say my computer is clean but I keep having SpyAxe reappearing. Can some one help me.
I sucessfully removed SpyAxe with Spyware Doctor only after I turned all the Spyware Doctor features on, if you don't activate the On Guard feature SpyWare Doctor will eliminate SpyAxe but will not prevent it from immediately reinfecting your computer; at least that's what happened to me the first few times I tried to learn how to use Spyware Doctor against SpyAxe.
I really do not know how to check. I do not get into the registry and do not even know where to start. Is there an easy way for me to know and check? If I have a virus, how do I get rid of it? If I back up before I know I have a virus and clean my system then put that info back on my computer, won't my computer still have the virus?? HELP!!
There are many good programs that will find any problems. Here is a good one. ewido anti-malware, download and update and scan. Take the 14 day free trial.

I tried HOuse call yesterday and it did not work - it took over 2 hours and it just said it was scanning data. How long is it supposed to take? I will try your other suggestions today!! Thank you!!
Here is another one to try.

You may want to download and use the Firefox and/or Opera Browsers. They will help keep you out of trouble, no Active X as used in IE. I use both.

I keep my WinXP updated, keep my AV (McAfee) updated, keep two anti-spyware programs (MS Antisypware and LavaSoft Ad-Aware) up-to-date and running. I turn my computer off when not in use. This helps.
But importantly, I never click on ads from web pages without first checking the URL in the status bar, and I configure my email client to display text only.
And MOST importantly, I never, ever, EVER, open binary attachments to email unless I know it's coming because its arrival has been arranged in advance by me and the sender, and neither should you.
This new WMF thing worries me, though. The workaround is clumsy and actually reduces functionality, and none of the steps I have taken (except allegedly my McAfee ViruScan's heuristic protection and the clumsy workaround) provides even partial protection.
I do hope MS releases a patch out of cycle, and soonest. I don't want my so-far perfect record blemished by this infection through an image file format that never needed to exist in the first place.
I guess I am lucky, as I escaped any computer trouble with viruses in 2005. I use the AVG Professional 7.1 Version and it stopped all that came in, sent them to the Virus Vault where I could then delete them. I really like this program. Like I said, so far, so good, knock on wood.
I've had no viruses, trojans, worms, etc. for at least the last 4 years. It must be luck, because I'm not that smart.
However, maybe my Safety-First approach is the reason. Unless I'm 101% certain an attachment is safe (which is virtually impossible), I do not open it. If it's from a known sender, I send a copy it to a secial folder, named "Virus Scan" which I created years ago. Then I open my AV program and scan the folder. If report is clear, I delete it from the folder, return to my email--and open it.
If I don't recognize the sender, or am suspicious that it's an imposter, I delete it, holding down the <Shift> key at the same time, to bypass the Recycle Bin.
If it turns out I was too paranoid, so be it. If it was important, the sender will make contact in order to resend.
My AV is updated automatically weekly (Norton's updates its .dat files every Thursday, so my trigger is set for 1:00 A.M. Friday)
My Firewall (free ZoneAlarm) is kept up to date.
Also, since I'm on cable (always connected), I shut off the PC whenever I leave it for long time periods.
Lastly, I keep my fingers crossed--which makes typing a little tough, but better safe than sorry!

I have Norton SystemWorks 2006 Premier. Starting in 2000. I keep up with all the updates and check for viruses one a week. Call it luck or just a good program.

No secret really. I do most of my computer stuff at work, so when I get home, the last thing I want to do is sit in front of a computer. But I have up to date virus detectors (McAffee and Norton) on both systems at home and Spybot S&D, and firewall protection as well. I also don't leave the computer on if I'm not using it. To give you any idea how often that may be, I was on vacation the last 11 days, I logged on twice.
"Congrats - tell us your secret of survival"
My arsenal:
avast! antivirus (set to automatically update)
ZoneAlarm (set to automatically update)
Mozilla Firefox v1.5
Gmail
Common sense
I receive virtually no spam, since I'm very careful of where my email address gets published, and when I do, I find it fairly easy to spot malicious looking email attachments and dodgy email addresses, and so I avoid those emails.
On this computer, I've never had a virus.
