No Viruses because I have Macs

by degolyer - 1/4/06 12:26 AM In reply to: How many viruses or Trojan horses wreaked havoc in 2005? by Marc Bennett Moderator

No viruses running Mac OS10.4 on my family's 5 Macs (iBook, Powerbook, G4iMac, G5iMac and G5dualPowerMac) . Rock solid performance.

lie or ignorance?

by stewbacca - 1/4/06 12:40 AM In reply to: How many viruses or Trojan horses wreaked havoc in 2005? by Marc Bennett Moderator

71 per cent say they had zero viruses. So are they lying or ignorant?

I would guess that a good 60 per cent of those folks have more than 1 type of malicious code on their machines right now, and just don't know it.

I am lucky in 2004 and 2005 as I got none.

by Mr. Chan - 1/4/06 12:59 AM In reply to: How many viruses or Trojan horses wreaked havoc in 2005? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I started to use computer in December, 2004 and immediately I got the worm which caused my PC re-boot and re-boot and it caused me C$ 120.00 to have someone re-install Windows XP for me. Then I spent C$ 100.00 for the Symantec 2004 Internet Security and I guess 2004 was a quiet year for the virus and therefore I did not catch any virus on my PC in 2004. Some time in 2005, I started to use F-Prot as my " Anti-Virus " device as well as AVG Free Edition. Only in November, 2005, I got so many email from FBI, CIA and still coming as Postmaster. The F-Prot seems to be quite effective as it will warn you once it detects something fishy on the email and the AVG Free Edition usually let you open the attachment and see if the email has a virus or not. A thumb of rule is , never open any email from a stranger no matter how good it might seem. Simply delete it for a peace of mind. Because once you got the virus, I really do not know how to get rid of it except to re-install Windows XP or Visita ( 2006 ). There are many publishers who would offer a free scan for you, such as BitDEfender,Freedom Internet Security, House Call by Trend Micro and Panda. Use them to obtain a second opinion. A thorough scan will take over an hour but it is free. Good luck to you all in 2006 because virus is easily detected than spyware these days. By the way, a nice free firewall name " Sygate personal firewall " is good to have to guard your PC.

Don't have to use anti virus software. I take the normal precautions with email and don't have any problems.

AFAIK, there were no viruses or an other bugs this year. Using the atest NOD32 (THE antivirus), Kerio Firewall ver 2!!!(works great, don't believe? Try it!) AdAware, Spyboot, SpywareBlaster and no IE at all, just Firefox with lots of plugins. (Windows with updates on).

My provider (Telefonica Espaņa) automatically updates McAfee Managed Virus Scan Agent, my anti-virus program, which is set on auto run. Also set on auto run is my firewall Zone Alarm Pro. In addition to these two magnificent programs I frequently run Ad-Aware, XoftSpy, Registry Mechanic, and WinXP Manager.

How many viruses or Trojan horses wreaked havoc in 2005?

by martinozekin - 1/4/06 2:06 AM In reply to: How many viruses or Trojan horses wreaked havoc in 2005? by Marc Bennett Moderator

well so far ive had my new PC for about 6 months now and not one trojan or worm has found itself in my computer, but i must admit i do get spyware. The antivirus solution that i use Is panda platinum internet security 2005 and i find this solution much useful as it detects spyware and viruses the moment it hits the computers hard drive. panda uses a thorough scan to detect viruses and noly takes about 20 mins to complete. so yeah... viruses barely enter my computer system, To block the latest viruses and spyware i truly recommend trying out panda. thanks

None so far.

by kanders - 1/4/06 2:17 AM In reply to: How many viruses or Trojan horses wreaked havoc in 2005? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I keep Norton Anti-Virus up to date, use only e-mail servers that scan for virus, trojans, etc. Never open e-mails from unknown sources and do use Firefox rather than Internet Explorer.

Another Virus Free PC

by skycatcher - 1/4/06 2:45 AM In reply to: How many viruses or Trojan horses wreaked havoc in 2005? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I use Sophos AV which is mainly a business package but very small and very fast. It doesn't slow your PC (unlike Norton) and has loads of 100% records. Five user licences will cost just over 200 GBP per year so prices are very good but, as far as I know, they don't do single user licences.

If anyone else thinks that they are virus free, run the free Housecall at http://www.trendmicro.com and see what results you get (marked as Free Virus Scan - bottom left of front page). It loads Sun Java, if you haven't got it already, then scans for Everything. It will also clean or remove viruses. unlike some that just tell you about them and then ask you to buy their products to get rid of them. They are the people that make PC-cillin which is only 38 GBP. This is a trusted site but be very wary of "free scan" offers on other sites.

Not Attack Free, but avoided all (I believe!!!) in 2002-2005

by Veejay14 - 1/4/06 3:23 AM In reply to: How many viruses or Trojan horses wreaked havoc in 2005? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I use Zone Alarm Pro as a Firewall, McAfee Virus Scan Pro, + two Spyware Checkers and NEVER open an attachment unless I feel certain it is genuine. I often query friends ref their emails to me just in case "their" apparent attachment has not been bona fide and this has saved me on several occasions when it was NOT them that had originated the e-mail.
I have followed advice and always now keep my Windows and my Virus/Firewall protection Updates going frequently and regularly.
Unfortunately this all appears necessary but I have so far avoided my earlier mistakes of 2000 and 2001 where I had major problems with virus attacks and hundreds of wasted hours correcting the damage.

There's no secret to success

I just use my Mac most of the time. Still, the rest of my family uses our Dell fairly frequently and have avoided all threats this year (save for the adware and spyware that you cannot help but let through).
