Outlook - Controlling which Class 1 attachments you can admit.

by atticgnom - 2/27/04 11:20 PM

By default, outlook blocks any and all class 1 attachments. These include a number of files, from the obvious .exe to database files and Adobe acrobat of all things. I have found nothing in outlook's help documentation or on Microsoft's website on how to take control of this, except for installing an exchange server. Don't think I'll be doing that for my home anytime soon.

Does anybody know how I can choose which level 1 attachments to admit without purchasing the server software?

Thank you so much for any help :o)

Nina

It's an on/off setting. Why have this in the blocking position when on a home machine?

Hi Bob.
At the risk of sounding like a complete moron here, I have not found the on/off switch.

Where is it? I will sure turn the darn thing off if I can find it :o)

Outlook Class 1 attachment policy - cut/paste from Outlook help

by atticgnom - 2/28/04 10:31 AM In reply to: Outlook - Controlling which Class 1 attachments you can admit. by atticgnom

Hi Bob.
I found the information leading me to ask the question in Outlook's help files; (enclosed below).

Now I am anxious to hear where the button is, so I can override the darn thing!!! :o)

Again, thank you so much :o)

-----------------------------------------------------
Attachment file types blocked by Outlook
There are two levels of attachment security. Access to level 1 files is blocked and can't be changed. When you receive an attachment with a level 2 file type, you will be prompted to save the file to your hard disk. If you use Microsoft Exchange Server, your administrator can add and remove file types for both levels of e-mail security. If a file type is added to both levels, it will be treated as a level 1 file type.

Turns out it depends on how you installed OL and what version. But answers there are.

Here's discussions about the registry entry to tickle. Sorry, no GUI today.

Thanks a bunch Bob :o)

I'll check this out, then go play with my old buddy the registry editor.
