by jas0nhe - 12/30/05 8:12 PMHow can I restart my network so that my IP address is reset? In the past during Internet outages, my IP address would be different when I could regain access. But how can I manually change my IP address? I tried unplugging my modem and router for a minute, but that didn't seem to help.

You can do the same thing by opening a command shell (Start => Run => cmd) and typing in ipconfig /renew Sometimes you have to use ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew but usually just renew will work.
But this is no guarantee that you'll get a new IP. That all depends on how the DHCP server is configured at the ISP end.

You can try unplugging everything some night, and then plugging it back in in the morning. The ISP's DHCP server might decide to cancel your lease and doll out that IP to someone else. No guarnatees it'll work, since it's all based on how your ISP configured things.

BTW why do you want to change the ip or set it manually.

There is no real reason I need to change my IP address, I'm just wondering how it can be done. I'm fine with my current address which I've had since the last Internet outage.
Manually changing ip address

For anyone else who needs to know how to manually change their ip address, the above user was correct. Go to Control Panel/Network Connections, right click the Local Area Connections and click properties. There you will see Internet Protocol, highlight it and click properties. Make sure you select use the following IP address and then you should be able to change it. I have also used the run/cmd ipconfig/renew and it also changed my ip address. Hope this helps.
