Send messages from a laptop to another

I just got a laptop for school. i don't want to really have to use it to learn, I mostly want to use it to fool around during class. It's a high school and it doesnt have wireless internet. I was wondering if there was any way i could send messages to another laptop near me using like bluetooth or something. If i have two laptops that both have bluetooth or wireless internet, could I send stuff between them without an internet connection? It'd be like putting a ethernet cable connecting two pc's and doesnt that do something? Also, if either bluetooth or wireless connection or something works, how close would i have to sit next to the other person?
