Hisense 42'' Plasma Model TA42P-HDRA

by cyclist - 11/27/05 9:10 AM

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone out there has had any experience with one of these? The display at the store was pretty impressive and the price was definitely enticing. I could not find any reviews on the web and that's why I'm reaching out for the cnet forum. Just seems like no one had heard of them.

Regards,
cyclist

They are a chinese company that produces many products in ASIA. They are a major industrial leader and are trying to get into the US market with a handful of plasma tvs. How good are there HDTVs, remains to be seen. If you plan on a purchase, make sure the store has a good return policy.

Check out the Vizio 50" plasma at Costco

by Mikeav - 11/29/05 3:27 PM In reply to: HISENSE by BONSPEED

Not sure what the price point is on the HiSense, but you may want to check out the Vizio 50" plasma at Costco. $2500! It's an excellent plasma (albeit, not quite as nice as the Pioneer Elite or top line Panasonics, but then again, it's easily $1 - $3,000 less!). Plust, Costco has a no questions asked return policy. Before you plunk down your cash, take a trip to the nearest Costco and compare. I purchased this unit this pas week. Very happy with it. Also, check out the reviews and user comments here on CNET (make sure you look at the Vizio P50 HDM- 50" review, not the 42" Vizio), as well as the review at Ultimateavmag.com. Good luck to you.

Buying Plasma at Costco... Not smart!... Here's why.

by Fredric J. Venning III - 12/4/05 8:15 AM In reply to: Check out the Vizio 50" plasma at Costco by Mikeav

It never seizes to amaze me that people who know a little bit about electronics even consider buying Plasma at the same store you pick up a tub of margarine or a barrel of mayonnaise!
If you haven't figured it out by now. Please, please let me fill you in.
The Costco buyers know very little to NOTHING about electronics. They are strictly price driven. The out look or attitude, if you will, is very simple.
"Every buy or large purchase they make. They look at the product as just another bunch toasters!
They purchase last years models that a supplier has festering in their warehouse. They buy the lot as discontinued, old, slow moving items. An offer is made to the supplier for every last piece. Making both Costco and the supplier happy.
How do I know this? Simple... I sold them every piece of out dated, worthless, problamatic electronic sku I had during my guilty ridden, sleepless nights in the wholesale business.
Now take Plasma as an example... There is only four (4) companies’ in the world manufacturing Plasma panels. So when you see a brand name that you have never heard of. (Vizio 50") It's simply very, very old technology. Usually the original manufacture is too smart to put their name on it. Sometimes they put thier brand name on another manufactors panel to help with sell through! Very confusing for You the consumer. As it is intended to be. You think it's a good price, but it's NOT. Usually it's a minimum of 2 to 4-year-old technology.
Recently, a manufacture of Plasma Panels. (remain un-named... start's with a P and ends with an R) Out right Purchased another manufacture of Plasma Panels.
(Start's with an N. and end's with an E. and only has one other letter in the middle) When the take over was complete. The purchasing company used a "WHOLE" warehouse full Hundreds upon hundreds) of second generation (4) year old panels. Did the exact opposite by putting their current brand name on the product and sold them to Costco. Costco sells a 42\43" at $2000 American or $2700 Canadian. Costco literature informs the consumer they are HD ready Plasma Panels. So the consumer thinks they are a true High Definition Plasma When in fact they are NOT, never have been and never will be a HD model. They are barley an ED (extended definition) model. This is true miss-direction advertising in it's truest form. Why else does Costco not offer people who can answer questions on this type of technology? They are making some serious profit here. Better profit than the Electronic stores selling the latest technology.
The price is no better than current ED models available at Electronic stores who can usually tell you the advantageous of current technology.
So, believe you, me... Costco relies of people that purchase their tubs of Margarine, Pickles, mustard and ketchup. Will also be naive enough to purchase their Plasma TV at the same time. They thrive on or count on people who have not had time to educate themselves in Plasma or other electronic areas. Or even people who ask family or friends they perceive to know more than themselves. When the brother-in-law read an article about Plasma 3 to 4 years ago and feel's he's now educated in the subject. They know your only true visual comparison will be against your old CRT television at home. Not side by side against current models. So do yourself a HUGE favour. "DO NOT BUY YOUR PLASMA AT A GROCERY CLEARANCE STORE." If you just did and you can still do something about it... great!!!!
Otherwise, good luck.

I've got one

by Shep - 12/23/05 7:38 PM In reply to: Hisense 42'' Plasma Model TA42P-HDRA by cyclist

Hi,

I bought one of these Hisense a couple of months ago. So far so good. Still works. A little rough around the edges so to speak, but the picture is beautiful. Some of the onscreen dialog boxes are not in perfect english. The tv does not support HDCP (copy protection), so my cable box refuses to connect to it directly via the a DVI cable. Have to use the component input. Evidently the tv cannot be controlled by any universal remote. The manual is also the worst written document I have ever seen. Almost useless due to bad translation. But then again, the price is right. There is a US-based website at www.hisenseusa.com. Good luck.

Hey. I've had one of these TVs for just about a year now, and I've not had the first problem (not counting user error). The picture is great with every input type, and especially good with component (I've been unable to try out the DVI so far). I really can't think of any negative things for this TV, and any thought that would come to mind would be squashed by the rediculously low price for a TV of this caliber. I fully and whole-heardedly recommend it to anyone who wants a lot of TV for not a lot of scratch.
