I origianlly partitioned my C: drive to a C and D partition, and I have aded another hard drive G: and H: I have plenty of space on those two. How do iI move programs from one to the other without seerious consequences?
Thanks,
While you can easilly move files from one partition to another, you'll find that most of the time you cannot do the same with programs due to the way they integrate themselves when installed. The shortcuts, registry entries, and other files all point to the place of installation (typically c:\program files), meaning most programs will not run correctly, if at all, when moved. Thus, the only way to go about safely moving programs from one partition to another is to uninstall them, then reinstall, selecting a custom directory during the installation process. If you no longer have the installer you can either search for it online or leave the program where it is, and instead move your music, video, and other space-consuming files to another partition.
Hope this helps,
John
I think only one way is there ,take the backup of all your application. then uninstall the applications.
then again install and import the settings.

Are you sure that it's your programs that are taking up so much space?
I'd sooner believe that it's your documents (e.g. movies, MP3's, even photos) that are taking up so much space. Or even tempfiles.
In addition to the earlier good information, you might be able to leave many of your currently installed programs where they are IF you clean out some of the junk on the current C drive. Unfortunately, you haven't give us the operating system you're using, but following the instructions below should certainly help:
How To Clean Unwanted Files From The Hard Drive
In addition, if you are using Windows XP and have Service Pack 2 installed, you might try tidying up a little using the link below:
Cleanup After SP2 Installation

After following all the procedures above, IF you're running Windows 2000 or XP, run Error Checking/Chkdsk and Defrag to optimize the hard drive:

Hope this helps.

to another partition (=driver letter): http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310147
As has been remarked, chances are that that is eating disk space, although some games also use LOT's of space in Program Files. Those should be uninstalled and reinstalled, with a possible move of saved data.

Runninf Windows XP Home edition. When I sign in, or log on threr is a screen for me and one for my wife. When I go exploring under my name there are about 6 gb of stuff. Is it safe to move those to the g:drive?
Most likely, yes. But you might have to tell the programs that use it that they have to look somewhere else from now on. That depends on how the access it.

Under local settings and under temp there are 3 GB of files .. Should those be safe to dump?
Temp files: yes. But those should be taken care of if follow the recommendations in the post of moderator Grif Thomas.
Local settings: no.
