Sony BRAVIA 40" KDL-V40XBR1 vs. Sony 50" KDS-R50XBR1?

by Alysin - 12/20/05 8:04 AM

I'm considering two Sony HDTVs. One is the Sony BRAVIA 40" KDL-V40XBR1 which is Sony's new LCD flat panel, it looks like a plasma. The other one is the Sony 50" KDS-R50XBR1 which is LCD projection that uses the silicon reflective display. Other than the screen size, does anyone have any suggestions of which one I should purchase?

Thanks
Ali:)

If your going to buy a Sony then KDS-R50XBR1 LCoS set.
But the JVCSet are just as good. John

what do you watch and how far are you sitting away

if you're sitting over 11feet away, i'd say go with the 50inch lcos. if you're under 10 feet away..i'd say go with the 40inch lcd.

since the 50inch is an lcos, the refresh rate is GREAT. good enough for watching sports on tv or playing video games without seeing ghosting(seeing the image drag behind itself because the tv isnt able to "refresh" its pixels fast enough). the lcd will still give you motion blur.

the lcos is bright, but if u have a room with a lot of windows, you should opt for the lcd just because it can be that much brighter with a very very good viewing angle. the lcos is still a rear projection so the viewing angle is not as good as flatpanels.

do you have a lot of room? if not, get the lcd so u can throw it on the wall.

i personally like the lcos set better because of the refresh rate and the colors seem a little washed out on the lcd sometimes. also, if there is an intruder in my house, i can use the 50inch lcos remote as a baseball bag cause that thing is a beast while still feeling good in my hand.

LCD Direct View vs Projection

by rschama - 2/5/06 8:41 AM In reply to: Sony BRAVIA 40" KDL-V40XBR1 vs. Sony 50" KDS-R50XBR1? by Alysin

Just my opinion, but direct view is always better that projection. I have been doing a lot of research online and doing some store shopping to get face to screen visuals. I think the Sony Bravia 40" XBR has a very nice picture by today's standards and looked better than all the other sets around it.

To truly make a decision you will need to go out and look at them yourself.

I just spoke with an electronics store salesman and he admitted the Sony had one of the nicest pictures in his store. I was also checking out the Sharp 45" Aquos.

careful

salesman will say tthat a lot of times because

1.) they are on commission
2.) that tv has one of the highest margins to help their numbers
3.) they dont now what they are talking about
4.) the only hook hd to that set...but regular SD to the other sets to mess with customer's minds
5.) if a (good) salesman sees you looking at a $3500 tv, obviously they wont show you a $2000 tv that is the same size.

even with that said.....i think the blacks could be a LITTLE better on the 40xbr....but its mostly cause its an lcd. its a great tv. i'd pick this over the 45' sharp anyday.

Why Not a 42" Plasma???....

by Psych Doc - 2/5/06 12:17 PM In reply to: Sony BRAVIA 40" KDL-V40XBR1 vs. Sony 50" KDS-R50XBR1? by Alysin

..LCD (both direct view and RP) got slammed in this month's Consumer reports. You may want to read that article before making any final decision.

Once you've seen a good plasma I don't think you'd be looking anywhere else.
