Downloading Stops

by cobbie - 12/16/05 8:15 PM

WIN98SE

For some reason when dowloading mail or a file from cnet or just trying to watch a news feed my computer just stops downloading. Sometimes I have to restart the download , sometimes not and if I do start, sometimes it will stop somewhere else duing the download sometimes it will complete the whole thing. Computer is not frozen at all, everything else seems to be working ok, just stops the download. Anybody have a suggestion of what might be causing this. It used to work fine. I did not downloaded anything just before this started. Thanks for any suggestions.

No I am on DSL. I have a D-Link624 router. One thing I might add is, sometimes when I send mail (Outlook) it will send right away yet the next message it will just sit there and sit there. There dosen't seem to be any time frame when it will finally send. Then it pops up of course asking to stop or wait so I wait and wait most of the time. Im sure this is all tied to the downloading problem. I just don't know Why or what to do to correct it. Rescue

We assume...

1. you have an antivirus, recently updated.
2. you have a spyware-malware detector/cleaner, recently updated, recently used
3. you have a firewall.
4. you have not messed with I.E. Privacy options.
5. you have a popup blocker.
6. your DSL modem is not overheating, not left on while offline.
Yes?

Yes to everything except POPUP Blocker

Running Norton
Ad-aware and Spy-Bot used weekly and updated weekly
I am running the Sygate Firewall set to Normal
Have not touched the E.I.options.
Do not run a popup blocker because i don't get popups except when I read my NY Times newsletter and I go to a story to read it, other than that I never get any, but I do use the immunize ******* in Spybot. But no seperate blocker. I don't recall doing anything different than I normally did it just seemed to start doing this.
And I am almost sure Modem is not overheating.

if your ISP provides free repair-replacement...

tell them the modem overheats and you want a replacement.
Or try reposting in the broadband forum.
Or use the Cnet search window near top of page for different ways of wording your question. I got 500 hits with "DSL downloading stops".
