Microsoft will NOT support my OEM windows XP Pro

by tbird1938 - 12/14/05 7:58 AM

I just upgraded a Dell 4100 with a OEM windows XP Pro. I have the funny looking CD and everything. It cost me a lot of money. Everything looks the same as the preinstalled version on my Dell 8400 except for the VIEW in THUMBNAIL. It is overlaping and all the file names are into the thumbnail below it. I called Microsoft and they told me they do NOT support OEM OS versions. They made it - They sold it - why not support it? Also does anyone have a solution to my problem?
Thank you

RE: OEM support

They made it, yes. They sold it, yes. They sold it to Dell, for a much lower price then you pay in the shop. But under a few conditions, one of them being that Dell does the support. If you don't like that, don't buy an OEM OS, but buy the full product yourself. Your choice.

OEM XP not supported

by homeone - 12/14/05 10:11 AM In reply to: Microsoft will NOT support my OEM windows XP Pro by tbird1938

It is true that MS does not support the OEM versions of their software. This has always been the case and is nothing new. The OEM software is much less expensive and many will opt for the lower price and loose the support (Example: XP Pro Retail $279.99, XP Pro OEM $139.99 both at Tiger Direct). Where did you buy your OEM XP? That is where you would obtain support. If you bought it from a local computer store, they are illequiped to offer support and assume that you know what you are doing when you buy the cheaper OEM version. As for as your Thumbnail view problem. What theme are you using in Windows (Classic, XP Style, or a third party theme modifier such as Stardock)? As a suggestion, go to Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Themes and select the "Windows Classic Style" under the "Windows and buttons heading". Then select "Apply" in the lower right hand corner. While you are still there select "Effects" and make sure that the "Use Large Icons" is not checked. Give these suggestions a try and Good Luck.

Never a put down

Art, Sorry the ideas didn't work. I have run across this before and it is usually a font problem but it has been a while and I don't remember the solution but will continue to work at it. I have used the OEM software for many years on my own systems for the money saving reasons but know I am on my own concerning any support. I'll keep at it and let you know if I come up with something new. Bill

There are always some helpful Microsoft gurus in the newsgroups. Just go to the following link and post your questions there. They really don't care if your software was OEM or otherwise.

Thank You

I called the guy where i bought the Windows XP Pro OEM
He came to the house and told me it was his fault because of the way he installed it. He had tried to save everything on my C drive. (I have a 40gig C drive and a 160 gig added F drive) He let me copy the C drive items to the F Drive. He reinstalled XP to the C drive after wiping everything out and now i have no problems that i know of.
Thank you very much. Art

Microsoft will NOT support my OEM windows XP Pro

The Dell 4100 is an older machine and I am not sure if the disc is compatible to that computer or it's BIOS and chipset. You might want to try upgrading your BIOS and chipset. --> support.dell.com --> Drivers and Downloads.

You may have to ask Dell if this disc will even work in this older machine. --> UpGrade a Dell GX620 and save yourself some headaches.

The Dell OEM XP Pro version disk is made, so it is only good, for use in one computer only.
Once the disc is used, it will not load properly in other computers. The determining factor is the MotherBoard.
Each MotherBoard is assigned an ID by Dell. When the disk is used for the first time a message is sent to Dell and it is then that disc is assigned to that computer (MotherBoard).

So when you change computers or MotherBoards your out of luck.
