For catching spyware there is no 1 cure. Load up with all the ammo you can cause its coming for you!
I Recommend running all of the following:
AD-AWARE SE by Lavasoft
SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY 1.4 by Patrick Kolla Safer Networking Ltd.
SPYWARE GUARD Javacool Software LLC.
SPYWARE BLASTER 3.4 Javacool Software
Use all available protection features on spybot and spyware guard and blaster as there are protections that these offer that will prevent spyware installation or limit its effects.
Keep the definitions and upgrades current on all of them.
In addition download and store the following programs in a folder in case you do get a spyware infestation often spyware will prevent you from obtaining these tools:
HIJACK THIS v1.97 by Merijn - merijn@spywareinfo.com
CW SHREDDER by Trend Micro
KILLBOX by Option^Explicit Software Solutions
These tools should only be used with guidance from one of the forums that take postings of Hijack This logs as you can inflict severe damage to your computer if you don't know what you are doing.
As for other spyware programs I would be extremely leary of any program that seems to invite itself to install on your computer to remove spyware(like those ones on the russian porn sites). It probably is spyware! DUH! I've had to remove a few of those for clients.
Visit sites such as:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
to scan for viruses and spyware
and
http://www.pcpitstop.com/
to check out your pc. It will tell you how to optimize you computer for maximum performance and repair security issues that allow spyware to install on your pc.
Run a firewall such as Zone Alarm or Kerio. I personally use zone alarm, and be aware of what you are allowing to connect. If you auto click allow on every pop up don't bother to install a firewall it won't work.
For Anti-Virus I say what does virus and spyware infestations do to a computer? It slows them down and makes them not work right isn't that what happens? Well isn't that what Norton does? Therefor Norton is the enemy! I use Grisoft AVG with no complaints!
Keep all of the above updated and upgraded and well as all of the microsoft updates and stay off those russian porn sites your problems will be minimal.
I am under the impression that Spybot is the ONLY security program, other than antivirus (you do have that, right?). Don't mean to sound sarcastic, really, but you need a lot more than Spybot to keep bad stuff away. After long experimentation I've found that running Spyweeper and Ewido actively, and running AdAware scans occasionaly works for me. I had Spybot until recently when I decided I was overdoing it a bit. The teatimer feature is good, but eats up a lot of resources. If you're into getting by as cheaply as possible, run Spybot with the teatimer active, Spyware blaster and Adaware also. Check up for updates every two days or so and you are probably pretty well protected.
