Verizon or Cingular and why

by PudgyOne - 12/7/05 12:26 PM

I am considering a phone plan in the future. I have limited my choices to Verizon or Cingular. I need to know the pros and cons of each.

Would like

No roaming charges

free long distance

caller ID

anonymous call rejection

free voice mail

downloadable ringtones

Text capability.(I do not use this feature much)

I will also need a phone that gets great reception.

you thought and comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

VERIZON OR CINGULAR

by HOPPY305 - 12/8/05 7:21 PM In reply to: Verizon or Cingular and why by PudgyOne

I have been a cingular customer since September 1994 and my wife has been a Cingular since October 1998. Sincethe merger of Cingular and AT&T Cingular customer service has gone to crap. I had a problem on 2 different times. The 1st time it took Cingular 3 months to correct and the same problem happen again and I had a Cingular customer service supervisor tell me I had changed plans in the middle of a billing cycle. I told him to look at my last bill the supervisor seen that I did not change my plan in the middle of a billing cycle. this time it took Cingular 2 1/2 months to correct the same problem that i had 6 months earlier. I have talked to 25 or 30 VERIZON customers some I know most I did not know and every one but 1 person told me that VERIZON HAS THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE. We are planing to switch to Verizon when our contract is up in June 2006. we are going to Verizon for the customer service having a full signal strenth at my home is a bonus. we have done away with our home phone 2 1/2 years ago and just use our cell. my best advice is to go to stay away from cingular even if you have to use a tin can and a string. As a suggeston if you know someone that has a cingular and a verizon phone see if they will let you see if you have good reception at your home.
GOOD LUCK AND STAY AWAY FROM CINGULAR

I would stay away from Verizon...

...because I've read information that Verizon disables phone features used for communicating (file transfer) with local devices like a PC. Bluetooth or cable connection features won't work on their phones.

Silly reason to trash Verizon

I'm annoyed by how Verizon disables SOME features on SOME of it's phones, but it isn't a good reason to tell anyone to stay away from Verizon. Verizon only disables a couple of features on its bluetooth phones (such as file transfer over bluetooth) but if you're a little tech savvy you can find out how to reenable those features. Again, that only applies to bluetooth phones, and only to one or two features of bluetooth. You make it sound like they cripple every phone in their product line

Not exactly what I've said...

I did not say everybody should stay away from Verizon. And neither did I say they remove features from all their phones. What I clearly said is what my personal decision would be, and I just stated the reason why. It would be so frustrating for me if I choose a certain phone because of its features, only to realize later that the network provider had it disabled. For what reason? Greed?

If you think my idea is silly? I think it is sillier to disable phone features which are put there by the manufacturer as a product selling point (because there are users who need the feature), and the reason why you pay more for those phones.

Silly reason to trash Verizon

Verizon disable all data transfers on the Motorola V710 (both bluetooth & data cable), and didn't disclose they did it, which is why they got sued over it. A phone I looked at from Verizon Wireless only has bluetooth enabled for the headset, but the phone doesn't offer the ability to transfer data of any type with a data cable, and the manufacturer doesn't even offer a cable for the phone. You're supposed to use the mini SD card to transfer all data. That's crazy. That's the Samsung a950. I have read somewhere on other forums that motorola has helped people re-enable all bluetooth on their phones. I don't know how true that is, but I avoided Motorola on my last purchase after I had problems with reception on the last phone I owned from them, and my brother is having the same problem too on a newer phone.

Go with Verizon!

Verizon has ,by far the better coverage. It might be a bit more expensive but it's worth it.
I have a family member who has Cingular and while have no problems calling out from my location, She has to move to a special spot. Her phone is always breaking down and her Voice mail only works occasionally.

Verizon, all the way

by themacdaddy - 12/10/05 11:33 AM In reply to: Verizon or Cingular and why by PudgyOne

I've had Cingular. The signal performance isn't as great as Verizon. And with poor signal performance you're looking at a greater tendency toward dropped calls, bad call quality, or signal strength that's too low to to hold a conversation. Not that you'll get bad service all the time, but you won't have as good service as you will with Verizon. I'm with Verizon now. Sometimes in my friends basement apartment I get zero bars on my signal meter, yet I can still use my phone, and hold a conversation. As long as your phone is getting a signal, you don't need a minium number of bars in order for your phone to work. My phone works fine in places Cingular phones either don't work, or doin't work well enough to make the call worth it. My buddy actually has to use the payphone when we go to the pub because his Cingular phone gets such a poor signal that he can't use it.
Customer service with Verizon is outstanding....and I really put the Customer service department to work (Service and billing questions/requests for one of my 3 Verizon lines) THey bend over backwards to help you, they're easy to understand, they speak perfect english and they're patient as saints with you. In my opinion, customer care is one of the most important things to look for in a wireless carrier.
I don't travel a lot, but when I do I've always had good service. Even in rural upstate new york. I almost can't believe how good their network is. I've been with verizon a little over a year, and I've had only one dropped call. The phone is so reliable that I actually use it as my primary phone. I don't even have a wire-line phone.
Verizon is a little more expensive than some other carriers, but they're comparable to Cingular in price. And I find that the cost is worth it. Do yourself a favor and get a verizon phone. But research the phone you want to buy before getting it. Look at user feedback for the phone you're interested in and see what experience others are having with it. My primary phone is the Motorola e815. I think it's the best phone I've ever had (and I've had many).
Hope this helps
