DVI vs Component

by Bob Werth - 12/7/05 2:44 PM

I purchased the Panasonic TH-50PHD8UK and I am in the process of connecting to Direct TV. With this service I can connect my monitor via component or DVI. Is there enough improvement in picture quality to warrent spending another $145 for the DVI connection the monithor? Thanks for your help.

You can try it lot less.

by Art - 12/7/05 4:52 PM In reply to: DVI vs Component by Bob Werth

PTC dvi to dvi 6feet M-M cable for less than $12 (I think I paid about $30 for mine). and if your box has HDMI instead of dvi then you will also need an DVI to HDMI adapter for about $15.

Now here is the bad news, eventually you will need either a dvi or hdmi switch box; forget that right now (nothing less than $250).

DVI Connection

by Bob Werth - 12/7/05 8:33 PM In reply to: You can try it lot less. by Art

The Panasonic monitor comes with limited connections for imput. It hase space to add a DVI port if you want to purchase it for an additional $145. I am trying to find out if my picture quality will improve (over component) enough to warrant the extra $$? Thanks

Not a lot. . .

by Coryphaeus - 12/8/05 6:15 AM In reply to: DVI Connection by Bob Werth

Since I sell all the new HD TVs I can test the connections. Using the new Toshiba 1080P DLP and the new Sony LCoS as test beds, I connected a Direct-TV HD receiver to both TVs using the component and the HDMI connection.

Could not see a difference.

I BET YOU CAN'T ANSWER THIS ONE?

by stewart norrie - 12/11/05 11:43 AM In reply to: Not a lot. . . by Coryphaeus

I own a Sony KP-65WV600 3 tube rear project t.v. I then added the dish 811 hi-def sat system using componit vidio cables Well the picture was terrible, So the next day I bought a d.v.i. cable and BAM beautiful picture. Also my Denon d.v.d. player also looked nasty using componit vidio interface cable So I bought a Denon 2910 unit with d.v.i. output set the unit to 1080 and added a Gifin d.v.i. switcher NOW THE PICTURE ON MY D.V.D. PLAYER AND SAT SYSTEM ARE JAW DROPPING. I have asked every tech and salesperson here in San Jose and they all told me componit vidio cables should have worked fine Also I had the t.v. calibrated 6 months ago by A good Sony Tech and told me componit vidio was o.k. in the t.v. Please reply if you can answer this one happy holiday stewart norrie cadillacstew@aol.com

DVI

by lordsmith - 12/11/05 9:33 PM In reply to: I BET YOU CAN'T ANSWER THIS ONE? by stewart norrie

There is a small switch on the back of your 811 that send signal to either dvi/rgb or component, if your picture looked dark and green, the switch was in the wrong position. Also under the card access panel on the right front of your 811, try adjusting that resolution switch. compenent should work just as good so check your cables and your switches, and look on the back of your sony to see if it has any resoluyion switches on it.

by Bob Werth - 12/8/05 8:56 AM In reply to: $145 for the DVI connection??? For the cable??? by jcrobso

Tried both

by HTHMAN - 12/8/05 12:19 PM In reply to: Picture quality by Bob Werth

Tried both connections on my HD Plasma with the HD Satellite box and really could not tell the difference. Only using it because I needed the component input for the progressive scan on the DVD player. Had 2 component inputs on the TV, but only one supported high-def or progressive scan. No point in that input unless you have an old non-progressive DVD player.

D.V.I. made a world of difference in picture quality

by stewart norrie - 12/8/05 12:43 PM In reply to: DVI vs Component by Bob Werth

My Sony KP-65wv600 looked nasty using componit vidio input with my Dish 811 hi-def sat system so Iam now usaing d.v.i. for my dish system and d.v.d. player with a Gifin d.v.i. switcher. Now the picture quality of the d.v.d. player and sat system look awsome. I also use the digital audio output of both systems to my amp good luck stewart norrie

Go DVI by buying over Ebay for $20.00 and save the money

by aarnoldt - 12/9/05 4:28 AM In reply to: DVI vs Component by Bob Werth

I did it and now cnet recommends spending the least costy DVI or HDMI connection route. I have a Vizio HDTV 42" and have a DVI by HDMI cable connecting to a Cox Cable Scientific America 8300HD box. No noise, great HD. I have the sound going through my Technics Stereo Surround System directly from the cable box. Spending more for cables onlky makes Berkins cable Com. rich.

DVI and component video!

by ddrdgs360 - 12/9/05 7:59 AM In reply to: DVI vs Component by Bob Werth

Save yourself the $145, component will be fine for directv. Yes DVI makes look nice, but for $145 you should find a much better deal elsewhere.

I have the same plasma

by kruzmisl - 12/9/05 10:17 AM In reply to: DVI vs Component by Bob Werth

I also have a new 8UK. I connect my TV cable box via an HDMI cable to a Yamaha RX-v2600 AV receiver. I have a single HDMI 15' run from my 2600 to the Plasma. My DVD via a HDMI cable to the 2600. The 2600 upconverts 480i to 720p/1080i, with either HDMI or component, and also down coverts so you can record s-video VCRs from HDTV source. The long run, plus eliminating 4 cables on each component saved me about a dozen cables total. No more snake pit. No more component cables getting loose.
For the 8UK you need an optional Yamaha HDMI card to plug into your 8UK to get connected, $145 list, Pd $125. Then you also need an HDMI cable. I got a premium one as I only want to buy this once! Don't get HDMI to DVI cable, get the HDMI both ends plus the HDMI/DVI adapter. This way if your cable box changes to HDMI, you don't have to replace the cable, just stop using the adapter. I noticed some picture improvement in testing both HDMI and component, (10% +/-). AND I saw NO degredation running it through my AV receiver using HDMI.
Enjoy

DVI is better

by User name - 12/9/05 4:57 PM In reply to: DVI vs Component by Bob Werth

on my PRO1110HD 50" plasma by Pioneer connected to a Cox HD cable box. ($20 HDMI to DVI three foot cable). I won't need the digital connection on my 26" LCD because the viewing distance is further and
the blacks are better.
