Increase wireless network range.

by paddysloan - 12/6/05 5:34 AM

Hey all,

My problem is with the range of my wireless connection. Im using a Netgear DG834G 54 Mbps ADSL Firewall Router which i pick up with my notebook PC using a Netgear WG511 54Mbps wireless card. The problem is that the router is situated in the office next door and so has limited range in my house, i.e i can only use it in my bedroom. Id like to be able to use it in my living room..whilst i can get a signal in the living room, it is very very poor and keeps dipping in and out. So basically i was wondering if its possible to use a device which i can sit in my bedroom (where the signal is very strong) and 'bounce' the signal from my bedroom as far as my living room so that i can get a good signal? I know the cause of the problem lies with the amount of walls the signal has to travel through but as i can get a weak signal in the living room, im hoping i can increase the signal quality. Its been suggested that i need an 'access point' or even another router which can do this, but im not very cluedup when it comes to wireless, esp when it comes to compatibility between my existing router and any potential access points or routers that i may need.

In a nutshell id like to know if the signal can be increased and if so, what equipment i need to do this, and futhermore, does it have to be a Netgear product or can i use other brands such as Belkin or Linksys. Many thanks!

Paddy.

It's been discussed dozens of times.

It's better if you take advantage of prior discussions first.

I have the same router and used an external antenna to increase range. Outpostdotcom and Compgeeks run regular sales on both directional and omni-directional antennas for less than 10 bucks and anything with about 5db gain should help if fringe reception is poor as it is in your case.

Most antennas have the same connector as the router else you'll have to buy an adapter.

Your other choice is a repeater but I don't have much experience with it.
